NEWPORT County AFC manager Warren Feeney is confident he has the squad to cope with a fixture pile-up next month.

County, who take on Carlisle United at Rodney Parade tomorrow (kick-off 1pm), face eight games in March after home matches against Hartlepool United and Barnet were postponed.

But this week’s signing of free agent Dean Morgan means the Exiles have brought in eight new faces since Christmas – with another addition possible next week.

And Feeney, who serves a one-match touchline ban tomorrow, believes his squad can cope with the gruelling schedule.

“It will be difficult for us with the pitch because we want to play football and ours is going to cut up because of the three teams on it,” he said.

“But playing Saturday and Tuesday at the end of the season is when you need big squads and I’ve brought a couple in.

“I brought in Dean Morgan this week and I’ve got one in on trial at the moment with a wealth of experience.

“With the games coming up you’ve got to make sure everyone’s ready because one injury and one suspension and you will struggle,” he added.

“There are a couple who are touch and go for Saturday and, on a good note, there were one or two big players who wouldn’t have played [against Barnet] last week because of the effects of injury.

“And that extra week has given them a bit of a rest.”

County were last in action on January 30 when they won 2-1 at Morecambe and Feeney is hoping his side can build on that result despite difficulties in training last week.

“Only time will tell if we’ve lost that momentum,” said the Exiles boss.

“It’s been hard getting a training pitch as well because we keep getting kicked off here and there.

“We’ve been pulled from pillar to post to try to get a training pitch and that’s where your work is done.

“Time will tell with the game but they’ve trained well; they’ve trained to their max and we’re hoping to take that into the game.

“There’s a good buzz about the place and I’m looking forward to the game. If it’s on.”

He added: “I’ve said to the players that they are in a position that the teams below would give their right arm for.

“We just have to make sure we win our games and not stay where we are, we’ve got to aim higher.”
