WHETHER they were running, jumping or throwing, Gwent athletes picked up their fair share of medals at the Welsh Junior Championships over two days of competition in Newport.

Newport Harriers’ Daniel Cork added almost a metre to his personal best in the under-20 men’s shot put to take gold.

His throw of 15.11m also took him joint top of the Welsh rankings alongside Colwyn Bay’s Nathan Thomason, who on this occasion had to settle for silver behind Cork.

Macey Morris just missed out on a medal in the under-15 girls’ 100m but then produced a lifetime best to win the 200m ahead of Cardiff’s Issie Tustin.

Tom Jenkins collected silver in the under-20 men’s 1500m but went one better in the 800m, clinching gold in a time of one minute 57.46 seconds.

Jenkins led a very strong contingent of middle distance athletes, with Connor Richards taking second place in the under-15 boys’ 800m and third in the 1500m, while Remi Adebiyi won bronze in the under-17 men’s 1500m.

It was a good few days for the Williams family. Tyler (under-20 men) and sister Armani (under-17 women), who are both coached by their father, former Great Britain international Kevin Williams, producing lifetime bests in the 200m.

Tyler was given the same time, 22.10secs, as event winner Kristian Jones, with the final result only being declared after the officials viewed the photo finish images.

Tyler also smashed his own personal best in the 100m as he again finished second to Jones.

Armani won a bronze in the 200m with a time of 26.26secs to add to her third place in the 300m earlier in the year.

Another member of the same training group, Isabel Davies, came home second in the 100m – Davis became 300m champion in June.

Before moving to the excellent facilities at Newport Stadium, success in the jumps and throws had eluded Newport Harriers, so the club was delighted when Hannah Morgan produced a fine series of throws to take the silver medal in the under-20 women’s hammer with 49.03m.

Kellen Jones produced a 6.66m effort to come second in the under-17 men’s long jump.

Amy Jenkins extended her own club record in the javelin to 31.13m for bronze in the under-15 girls’ category.

Morgan Keen Williams took the same colour medal in the under-13 boys’ event with a big improvement of 25.49m and Katelyn Seville threw 15.62m to pick up the silver medal in the under-13 girls’ javelin.

Meanwhile, Sophie Pope was the toast of Cwmbran Harriers after becoming the new under-15 girls’ high jump champion.

A clutch of Cwmbran athletes just missed out on the podium top spot with Madison Powell (under-13 girls 70m hurdles), Catrin Minto (under-13 girls high jump), Carys Jordan (under-16 girls hammer), Meg Keyse (under-13 girls discus) and Izzy Parry-Jones (under-20 women 400m) all sealing silver medals.

Macey Jones had two reasons to celebrate with silver and bronze in the under-17 women triple jump and long jump respectively.

Under-15 boys’ long jump bronze went to Dylan Matthews and under-17 Bethan Powell was also third in the women’s under-20 100m final.

India Jenkins lowered her best in the under-15 girls’ 300m by more than two seconds.
