WARREN Feeney will be in charge of Newport County AFC at Grimsby Town tomorrow night and he knows he needs a win to get the fans off his back.
The Exiles boss admitted that supporters had every right to boo him after Saturday’s 2-1 home defeat to Cambridge United that saw his side slide into the League Two relegation zone.
There were chants of ‘Feeney out’ after Cambridge’s winning goal and many more fans have flooded the Argus website and social media platforms since Saturday calling for him to resign or be sacked following a run of just one win in 21 games.
Leyton Orient, the only team to lose to Feeney’s men this season, have today dismissed manager Andy Hessenthaler after successive defeats saw the O’s slip to 14th in the table.
But the County board have remained silent since the weekend, opting not to issue a statement of support for their manager or discuss the issue with the Argus.
That is a state of affairs that surprises Chris Silverthorne, leader of the Amber Army supporters group (formerly the County Choir).
“I am surprised because they wasted little time in getting rid of Terry Butcher this time last year,” said Silverthorne.
“They acted quickly then but it is a difficult situation for the board because they don’t want to be paying Warren off so they want to give him time to turn things around.
“And this match at Grimsby is exactly the kind of game that we might just go and win when we’re under pressure.”
Silverthorne said he was not one of the fans to call for Feeney’s head at Rodney Parade on Saturday but he believes it is time for a change.
“I didn’t chant for him to go and I didn’t boo at the end,” he said. “I’m not a boo boy.
“I met Warren a number of times over the summer and found him to be a really switched on guy who knows what he is doing.
“He’s a lovely bloke as well and I really wanted it to work out for him but I think his time is up.
“We’re coming up to the nine or 10-game mark when we sacked Anthony Hudson [in 2011] and Butcher [in 2015] and it worked for us.
“And I think if we do opt to replace Warren it could save us, just like it did last season and when Hudson went.”
