MULTI-TALENTED Commonwealth Games gold medallist Lauren Price could have a crack at cage fighting once she hangs up her boxing gloves.

The Gold Coast middleweight champion has already won world and European kickboxing titles, dabbled in taekwondo alongside Jade Jones and played football for Wales.

Yesterday it was confirmed that the versatile 23-year-old will travel to Bulgaria next month for the women’s European boxing championships.

And it’s the chance of more major competition glory that means Price’s focus for now is solely on the boxing ring and not the octagon.

Ystrad Mynach’s Price wants to add to her two European bronze medals in Sofia (June 4-13) and then challenge the best on the planet at November’s world championships in New Delhi, India.

The GB Boxing squad member’s long-term goal is making the plane for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, after which there may be an opportunity to turn pro and carry on boxing.

When asked if she fancied turning her hand to another sport, she said: “Maybe cage fighting, I don’t know.

“I am a fan, I love Ronda Rousey (former UFC champion), and I’ve seen Jack Marshman (current UFC fighter from Abergavenny) fight a few times.

“But my only focus is Tokyo. I’ve just got to keep doing what I’m doing and working hard, hopefully medal in the Europeans and worlds, keep pushing and hopefully I’ll get there.”

On Bulgaria, she added: “It’s a tough draw at the Europeans because you’ve got the likes of Russia, Poland and other Eastern European countries there.

“Being a GB athlete, I think a lot of people expect me to medal, and on my day I believe I can beat anyone.

“The Gold Coast was a confidence boost. I had a bronze in Glasgow and made history, and I made history again by becoming the first Welsh woman to win a boxing gold, so I’m over the moon.”

And on the possibility of staying in boxing and switching from an amateur to a professional, Price said: “My main aim is Tokyo 2020 and if the right doors open after that then why not.”

Price, whose Pontypool ABC stablemate Rosie Eccles struck silver at last month’s Commonwealths, said she “loved every minute” of her Gold Coast experience.

Wales enjoyed their best ever Games Down Under with 10 golds in a total of 36 medals.
