IT was another night to celebrate for Gwent MMA fighters Mason Jones and Kris Edwards at Cage Warriors 95 in London, as both came home with wins under their belts, writes Jason Batty.

First up in the O2 Arena octagon was Tillery Combat’s Kris Edwards who was looking to make it four straight wins in his bantamweight clash with Italian Luca Iovine.

This was certainly a step up in calibre of opponent for Edwards, as prior to this contest the Italian had been riding high on an eight-fight winning streak before losing a title shot to Nathaniel Wood.

Edwards started the brighter with some slick combinations but got stunned with a right hook which allowed Iovine to control the latter stages of the first round.

The second saw Edwards yet again showcase his striking, hitting the Italian with some painful shots to set up a takedown and suffocate his opponent.

Edwards showed supreme control while dropping elbows on Iovine for most of the round.

The session also saw the Italian have a point deducted for holding the fence after several warnings from the referee.

The head shots absorbed by Iovine may have led him to forget the rules as he had a further two points deducted in the third round for an illegal knee which meant only a stoppage would do for him.

Consequently, the Italian came forward with nothing to lose, looking for a knockout blow to take the victory, but the experienced Edwards, who still looked for the finish himself in the final round, took the win.

It was also a night to remember for Blaenavon’s Mason Jones who fought on the main card for the first time when he was matched with late replacement Konmon Deh at lightweight.

Frenchman Deh, renowned for his durability and unorthodox style, offered Jones his biggest test yet, but the Celtic Pride Martial Arts fighter controlled the contest from the start and took a unanimous decision.

Winning every round, the only danger the Welshman seemed to encounter from Deh was an early flurry of strikes in the second session.

But Jones secured a takedown and controlled Deh for almost all of the round, going for several submission attempts which were fought off by the Frenchman.

The third round followed suit as Jones secured another huge takedown and took the back of Deh, forcing a body triangle as he searched for the rear naked choke.

Despite the desire to get the finish, Jones ran out of time, but it was a mature performance from the 23-year-old prospect who moved his unbeaten record to 5-0 and will now seek the scalp of a bigger name at Cage Warriors 97 in Cardiff.
