NEWPORT County AFC will confirm the loan signing of Bristol City midfielder Tyreeq Bakinson today and manager Michael Flynn hopes to add a goalkeeper and another striker before Saturday’s League Two opener at Mansfield Town.

Bakinson came on as a substitute in County’s 3-1 friendly defeat to Stoke City under-23s at Rodney Parade at the weekend.

A trialist goalkeeper, believed to be Queens Park Rangers’ Timothy Seny Dieng, played 90 minutes and could join on loan this week.

Padraig Amond cancelled out Daniel Jarvis’ opener before two Tyrese Campbell goals sealed victory for the Potters youngsters.

“I think Keanu [Marsh-Brown] looked really lively when he came on,” said Flynn.

“I thought David Pipe was brilliant when he came on too. He keeps going, keeps knocking on the door and it gives me a few [selection] problems for next weekend.

“There were a couple of good performances out there and one or two who didn’t do themselves any favours, if I’m honest.

“We looked to change things around and try out different styles, different formations, different strike partners playing together and I was always going to make changes at half-time – it wasn’t a reaction to anything.

“I changed it around a lot and it broke up our rhythm a little bit but we’ve got the makings of a good team and a good squad and hopefully we’ll get a couple more in before next weekend as well.

“Ideally I’d like another two loans and a permanent signing but I don’t think that’ll be possible,” he added.

“We definitely need a goalkeeper and a striker but they’ve got to be the right ones – I’m not just going to take somebody for the sake of it.”

Asked about the trialist goalkeeper, the manager said: “Joe Day had a personal matter to deal with and I didn’t need him to play so it gave me a chance to look at a trialist.

“QPR have been outstanding and really helpful in allowing us to look at the trialist with a view to a loan.

“It just goes to show the relationships that we’ve got with other football clubs that they can provide this kind of quality because I thought he did quite well.”

Flynn, who dismissed rumours of a big money bid for last season’s top scorer Amond, is still pondering a final behind-closed-doors warm-up this week before the trip to Field Mill.

“I’m not sure yet,” he said. “It will depend how the players feel but if not then we’ll have one ourselves in-house.”

Meanwhile, the club has announced that Simon Sadler and Neil Collier have resigned from the board of directors.

The Supporters’ Trust also gave an update on the fans’ survey on the ownership of the club: “The Newport County AFC Supporters’ Trust would like to thank the 750 people that took part in the recent consultation regarding future ownership of the club.

“We are now in the process of analysing the data and will be holding a public meeting on Thursday, September 20, (venue to be confirmed) where we will share the results and outline next stages.”
