MANAGER Michael Flynn is hoping to add another striker to the squad this week but Padraig Amond believes Newport County AFC have already got the attacking threat to make an impact in League Two.

Amond played for the full 90 minutes against Stoke City under-23s at the weekend, partnering Antoine Semenyo in the first half and Jamille Matt in the second half.

And last season’s top scorer, who headed County level before two late goals gave the Potters youngsters a 3-1 win, is confident that the team has the firepower to hurt their rivals.

“I think you can take any of the strikers there and put them together and it would be a good partnership,” said Amond.

“We have a lot of attacking threat and a couple of formations we can play that will suit [different] players as well.”

Keanu Marsh-Brown and Robbie Willmott could also play as part of a front three.

“We’ll be fine going forward and we’ve signed good players all around the pitch, which is positive,” added Amond.

“Maybe the manager might try to sneak another player in during the week as well but the squad we have is a talented squad so hopefully we can have a good season.”

Amond is likely to start up front with either Matt or Semenyo in the League Two opener at Mansfield Town on Saturday.

“That’s the first time I’ve played with Antoine and it was probably only the second 45 minutes I’ve played with Jamille,” said the Irishman after the Stoke game.

“It takes a bit of time to get used to each other and pre-season is hard sometimes because you’re trying to forge relationships but the manager needs to get minutes into everyone.

“Pre-season has been very good, we haven’t picked up any injuries and training has been excellent.

“Everybody is looking really fit and we’re all raring to go for the weekend.”

Semenyo, who arrived on loan from Bristol City earlier this month, says he has enjoyed playing with Matt in pre-season.

The 18-year-old told iFollowExiles: “I’m more of a target man when I play for [Bristol] City [under-23s] but playing with Jamille as a target man I can win the second balls, get in behind and come short so it’s so much easier for me playing with him.

“But it’s about building relationships with all the other strikers and that’s what I’ll try to do.

“I’m a very confident character and I’m so ready to start.

“I’m happy with the way I’ve played and if I get more starts I feel there’s more goals to come.

“I’m hoping to score at Mansfield as well. I’m buzzing for that game. I can’t wait.”

Semenyo wants to become a fan favourite at Rodney Parade.

“It was great to see the support we took to Hereford for a pre-season friendly and I’m hoping to feel that support throughout the season,” he said.

“Hopefully the fans will stick by me through the ups and downs and I’m looking forward to it.”
