A STOPPAGE-TIME winner from Jamille Matt saw Newport County AFC climb to eighth in the League Two table with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Notts County at Rodney Parade.

Kane Hemmings had given the visitors an early lead before Fraser Franks and Mark Harris struck back for the Exiles.

Kristian Dennis levelled for the Magpies three minutes from time before substitute Matt won it at the death.

Here are the talking points...

That’s entertainment!

The 2,935 fans inside Rodney Parade and those who paid £10 to watch at home via the EFL’s new streaming service certainly got their money’s worth.

Michael Flynn’s men should have won the match far more comfortably and nearly paid the price for some sloppy defending but they showed bundles of grit and determination to fight back from a goal down early on and then to recover from the hammer blow of conceding the equaliser three minutes from time.

It’s not good for the manager’s blood pressure (or for journalists trying to write on-the-whistle match reports) but the thrilling finale sent everyone home happy and should bring a few more through the turnstiles for Saturday’s home clash with Grimsby Town.

Matt finish gets Exiles out of a jam

After the late leveller at Exeter City last Saturday and last night’s crazy end to the match we are quickly learning never to write off this new-look County team.

Mark Harris was the hero at St James Park but it was Jamille Matt – the man who made way for Harris to start – who came off the bench to claim the headlines against Notts County.

Matt and Harris are now both on two goals – just one behind top scorer Padraig Amond, who so nearly added to his tally last night as well as providing two superb assists.

South Wales Argus:

Harris growing in confidence

The Cardiff City loanee has made no secret of his dream to represent the Bluebirds in the Premier League and who’s to say he won’t achieve that after a very promising start to his time at Rodney Parade.

Harris earned the right to start after his strike at Exeter and he grabbed his chance, taking his goal brilliantly after being played in by Amond.

The 19-year-old looks to have all the attributes he needs to be a top striker and Neil Warnock can expect some glowing reports in his inbox today.

Can Crofts get back in?

Captain Andrew Crofts again missed out with a toe infection but Matty Dolan and Tyreeq Bakinson performed so well in central midfield that he was hardly missed.

The Wales international has been a mentor for the likes of Bakinson and he will be delighted to see the Bristol City loanee excelling but he may also be wondering if he will be able to reclaim his starting spot when he is finally free of pain.
