Several Gwent squad players made the journey to Pembroke Leisure Centre on January 13 to play in the Pembrokeshire Satellite tournament, the fourth tournament in the Satellite 2007/08 series.

Evan Williams and James Ellaway, both of Abergavenny, took the under-11 boys singles event by storm.

Both players gaining a place in the quarter-finals as a result of determined play in the early rounds.

Williams came up against Tsung Fong Mo in his quarter-final match, eventually losing 21-5.

Ellaway played Tommy Davies in his quarter-final and out-played his opponent to win 21-9 and secure a semi-final place against Matthew Pritchard.

After a hard fought match Ellaway lost 21-9 to miss out on making the final.

In the under-11 boys doubles the pair teamed up but they couldn't replicate their individual success, only managing to win one of their three matches and failing to progress.

Morgan Williams, also of Abergavenny, was the sole Gwent entry in the under-11 girls' competition.

In the singles she stamped her authority, winning two of the three matches to come runner-up in the box and progressed directly to the semi-finals.

Williams was drawn against tough opposition in Bethany Richards of south Glamorgan and unfortunately lost the match 21-4.

She then joined Gean Sou Mo in the doubles event and following a strong performance in the box, they finished as runners-up in the tournament.

This result gave them a doubles final play-off match against Bethany Richards and Allana Morris.

Two very close games took place resulting in Richards and Morris taking the title 15-12 and 16-14.

Matthew Parsley of Portskewett entered the under-13 boys' singles and was again drawn in a box with very strong opposition.

He failed to progress from the box after losing his two games.

Sarah Haynes of Pontypool was the sole Gwent squad player in the under-13 girls' tournament.

Haynes took up the challenge against this strong opposition playing a total of four games.

Unfortunately she could only win one and therefore failed to progress beyond the opening round.

In the doubles she joined Elena Richards of South Glamorgan.

With all pairings playing in one box, the top two pairings were due to meet in the final match.

Winning one game and narrowly losing two others, there would be no finals place for Haynes this time as she finished in a respectable third place.

Only two Gwent squad players were involved in the under-17 boys' event with Sam O'Callaghan of Brynmawr and Evan Hughes of Ebbw Vale taking part.

The pair progressed from their respective boxes to a semi-final match.

Hughes played George Cherian in his semi-final, but failed to progress further.

O'Callaghan played Mike Jones and also lost out on a place in the final.

But the duo teamed up successfully to win the under-17 boys' doubles tournament.

The Gwent pair took all comers on in the opening rounds, winning all six of their games to leave them at the top of their box.

The final saw Hughes and O'Callaghan play David Dutton and George Cherion, a pairing they had beaten earlier in the competition.

The Gwent boys' excellent win means they currently sit at the top of the qualifying table for the South Wales Regional Finals.

The next and fifth qualifying Satellite tournament will be played at Abercynon later in the month.
