COUNTY boss Peter Beadle heaped praise on his side after a superb team performance saw them earn a vital 2-0 win at Cambridge City last night.

The result moves the Exiles up to sixth in the Blue Square South table, level on points with fifth-placed Bath City, who also won last night, but with an all-important game in hand.

"I've been delighted with the way we played in the last four games, I just think last night we got what we deserved at last," said Beadle.

"Cambridge is never an easy place to go and I thought the performance from start to finish was spot on. They're a young, exciting, very mobile side and for us to control the game the way we did was a credit to the players and the effort they put in."

After drawing a blank in their previous two games Beadle's men finally made the breakthrough with a Charlie Griffin header from Andy Gurney's free-kick a minute before the interval.

"We thought we were going to go into the break frustrated once again but we got the goal and it made us much more relaxed," he said.

"Once we got the second our confidence improved and we moved the ball very well and created more chances towards the end. It was a joy to watch and the table looks a lot healthier for us now.

"I said to the players before the game I think we need four wins and we got the first one last night. If we win our last three games then nobody can catch us."

Although reluctant to single out any one player, Beadle claimed that Gurney, who scored a spectacular second to seal the win, had proved the doubters wrong.

"Every player has their critics when they come to a club but I know what each player can give me and Andy has done it consistently since he's been here," he said.

"He came in at a time when we weren't playing well and some people got on his back but he's certainly proved his worth.

"That's four goals and four assists for him now and the strike last night was fantastic."

County will be hoping that top-of-the-table Lewes beat seventh-placed Fisher Athletic at home tonight before turning their attention to Saturday's massive game against second-placed Eastbourne Borough at Spytty Park.
