NEWPORT County will go up and stay up, says Exiles old boy Charlie Griffin.
The former County striker, who left Spytty Park in the summer of 2008, has gone on to take the Blue Square Premier by storm with Salisbury City and Stevenage Borough – scoring 29 goals over the last 18 months.
And he is adamant that Dean Holdsworth’s team will have enough to flourish in the division should they clinch promotion this season.
County surged into an eight point lead at the top of the Blue Square South with a game in hand after Sunday’s 2-0 home win over Bromley and Griffin is delighted with the progress at the club since his departure.
“I enjoyed my time at Newport. It’s a great club and it’s fantastic to see them doing so well,” said the 30-year-old.
“I know Charlie Henry because he lives in Stevenage and I still speak to one or two of the backroom staff.
“Congratulations to Deano and the boys. I know from my time that the place is crying out to be in the Conference,” he added.
“We missed out two years running but it looks like this might be the year.
“It takes a lot to top that league and if they do get up I can see them making a go of it. I think they would hold their own with what they’ve got at the moment and Deano would also want to bring more in to strengthen and maybe even go full time.”
Griffin lined up against League Two side Port Vale in the FA Cup first round replay last night after his injury time equaliser at Vale Park earned his side a second bite of the cherry.
And he’s hoping to be facing teams like Vale every week in the Football League next season after his hat-trick in Saturday’s 5-3 win over Gateshead saw Stevenage remain second in the table.
“To be honest I hope I won’t be playing Newport next year because I hope we’ll be in the League,” said Griffin.
“I will try to get to a game soon though and maybe we’ll come up against each other in the FA Trophy. That would be nice.”
