GLAMORGAN are flying high in the four-day game but their limited overs woe continued at the Swalec Stadium tonight thanks to the batting of Surrey’s Chris Schofield.

The Dragons, who climbed to the top of Division Two of the County Championship after yesterday’s crushing innings win against Gloucestershire, were denied only their second Clydesdale Bank 40 win of the campaign.

They were beaten by the Unicorns - the part-timers’ first victory - in Bournemouth last weekend but had a sniff of coming back strongly against Surrey under the Cardiff floodlights.

Surrey’s spinners kept Glamorgan down to a total of 223-8 that looked far too small for their bowling attack to defend.

But once they got rid of star Surrey batsman Mark Ramprakash they moved in for the kill.

However, former England all-rounder Chris Schofield smashed a magnificent unbeaten 64 to see his side home by two wickets with eight balls to spare.

The visitors made a solid start but skipper Rory Hamilton-Brown fell tamely for 21, clipping Huw Waters straight to David Brown at mid-on.

And Glamorgan had a real sniff when David Brown trapped opener Stewart Walters leg before to leave the visitors on 53-2.

That brought Usman Afzal and Ramprakash together in the middle for what was always likely to be the key partnership of the game.

They gave the innings impetus by taking 20 of the 13th over bowled by David Brown and it was near level pegging at the 15 over mark.

But Afzal then flashed at a length delivery by Will Owen and Jim Allenby made no mistake at first slip, sending him on his way for 23.

The key appeared to be whether anyone could stay with Ramprakash and skipper Jamie Dalrymple missed a golden chance for wicket number four when he dropped Matthew Spriegel on six off left-arm spinner Dean Cosker.

But the wicket came next over and it was the big one - Ramprakash gloving Owen to wicket-keeper Wallace for 40 to leave the visitors struggling on 116-4.

And it got better for the hosts when wicket-keeper Gary Wilson was run out for a duck.

Glamorgan were then in total command when superb work by Wallace saw Spriegel stumped off Cosker for 14.

But the game swung back towards Surrey when Chris Schofield started swinging in the powerplay, with the left-hander taking a particular liking for the bowling of Chris Ashling.

Gareth Batty, who needed a runner after injuring his hamstring fell for 22, but Schofield was proving to be the key man against the spin of Dalrymple and Cosker.

They needed 22 from the last four overs and the left-hander passed 50 from 47 balls to put Surrey on the brink of victory.

Chris Tremlett was run out but Andre Nel joined man of the match Schofield to help the visitors over the line.

Aussie opener Mark Cosgrove may have had a dodgy right shoulder but he put it to the wheel to set Glam off to a great start in their innings.

Cosgrove took 46 balls to bring up his fourth one-day 50 in a row, troubling the Surrey bowlers with a wide array of shots through both the off and leg side.

The best off the lot brought up his half-century, a tremendous straight drive off seamer Jade Dernbach to pass the same mark that he did against Lancashire, Worcestershire and the Unicorns.

But he failed to go on from there and after using up two lives - a simple chance downed by captain Hamilton-Brown on 55 and a skied shot falling safe on 59 - he went to an appalling shot.

Gareth Batty hit the top of his off stump when the left-hander opted for a heave across the line.

Glam needed their overseas player to bat through but he threw away his wicket to make it 105-3.

It had all looked good for Glam when Cosgrove, whose injured shoulder prevented him fielding but should not stop him playing in the County Championship clash in Leicester that starts on Monday, and his compatriot Allenby opened in style.

They looked set for an imposing total but the right-hander was the first to go, top edging Schofield to Afzaal to go for 29 off 27 balls with the score on 88.

He was swiftly followed by skipper Jamie Dalrymple who was stumped off a wide from former England leg-spinner Schofield, keeper Gary Wilson making up for failing to gather the ball when Allenby was out of his crease earlier on.

After Cosgrove had gone, Ben Wright followed with another daft shot, picking out Ramprakash on the mid-on boundary off Matthew Spriegel.

The nerves had set in, the run rate plummeted and hopes of matching early projections of a score of over 270 faded.

Mark Wallace (9) had to try something different to get Glam out of a rut but became Wilson’s second stumping victim off the bowling of Batty.

The Dragons were reliant on one man - Tom Maynard - and he combined some sensible bowling with a number of cracking shots to bring up his 50 off 53 balls.

But the wickets kept tumbling with another awful shot seeing David Brown caught by Chris Tremlett off paceman Andre Nel to become the first victim of seam and make it 184-6.

And it was grim for the hosts when the South African then ended Maynard’s super innings (64) when he rushed the right-hander, who could only sky his pull shot to Ramprakash at mid-wicket.

Dean Cosker and Owen inched the Dragons past 200 but their total of 223-8 looked light, but it took Schofield’s heroics for Surrey to make it.
