AFTER being victims of Worcestershire’s late charge to Division One last season there is little chance of Glamorgan giving up in their bid for County Championship promotion until it’s mathematically impossible.

Glam welcome table-topping Northamptonshire to Swansea tomorrow morning knowing that there is no margin for error.

They are 48 points behind the leaders and 30 behind second-placed Middlesex, who also have a game in hand.

Promotion looks a long shot for Matthew Mott’s seventh-placed side but if they need inspiration then they only need to look at Worcestershire.

When Glamorgan beat the Pears at Colwyn Bay on August 12 last year the Midlanders were 37 points behind them.

However, a superb finish to the campaign (and a friendly, yet controversial, declaration by champions Sussex on the last day of the season) helped Worcestershire to sneak into second place.

Glamorgan have six games left and still have the chance to leap over five of their rivals.

“There are so many points for winning games that you can move up the table quite quickly,” said wicket-keeper Mark Wallace.

“Every year there tends to be a side that goes on a late charge and either gets close or does what Worcestershire did.

“We are in a good position to push on and we have got all the attributes of an attacking side.

“It can be a good thing when you are in a position where you have to win and Swansea tends to be a result wicket.

“Northants are a top side but if we can claim their scalp then it will send a message out there to the rest of the division.”

Glamorgan have named a 13-man squad for the clash with Northants, who won by an inning and 177 runs when the sides met at Wantage Road in May.

They are likely to field a twin-spin attack of Robert Croft and Dean Cosker while James Harris is set to pass a personal milestone.

The fast bowler, who was this week recalled by the England Lions for their series with Sri Lanka A, needs one more wicket to claim his 200th victim in first-class cricket.

The 21-year-old will become the youngest Glamorgan player to pass that mark, beating the record that Darren Thomas set when 23.

Glamorgan: A Petersen (captain), G Rees, W Bragg, S Walters, M Powell, J Allenby, M Wallace (wicket-keeper), G Wagg, J Harris, R Croft, D Cosker, W Owen, A Jones.
