FEARS Wales’ world class prop Adam Jones could miss Six Nations action this season appear to be unfounded, the Ospreys revealed yesterday.

There was cause for concern after the tighthead left the field with a neck injury during his region’s 22-14 defeat to the Scarlets on Boxing Day.

But Ospreys head physio Chris Towers said they hope Jones will be fit to play in New Year’s Day’s home derby clash with Cardiff Blues.

Jones’ condition will be closely monitored after he suffered a muscle spasm in his neck.

“Adam suffered a minor muscle spasm and we remain hopeful about his prospects of being available for selection on New Year’s Day, subject to him undergoing a fitness test later in the week,” Towers said.

It will be welcome news for Wales fans, the prop being so important to the national side.

Warren Gatland’s team have often struggled badly without the 2005 and 2008 Grand Slam winner.

With a lack of quality cover at tighthead, Wales desperately need the 30-year-old Lions star fit.

His absence in last season’s Six Nations campaign – Jones only made one appearance in the final match against France – saw Wales struggle in the scrum where Craig Mitchell deputised.

And Wales fared even worse in the set piece when Mitchell couldn’t play this autumn for Australia’s visit.

The Exeter Chiefs forward was unavailable because his move to an English club meant they were not obliged to release him for a match outside the International Rugby Board’s window for Test rugby.

Wales’ third choice tighthead, Cardiff Blues’ Scott Andrews suffered a miserable afternoon against a Wallaby front row hardly recognised as a world power in the scrummaging department.

Meanwhile Wales centre Jamie Roberts is a doubt for the Blues after he suffered a knee injury in their 28-9 win over the Newport Gwent Dragons at the Cardiff City Stadium on Friday night.
