NEWPORT Gwent Dragons are confident that international wingers Aled Brew and Tonderai Chavhanga will overcome injury worries to take their place in the starting line-up against the Scarlets tomorrow.

Both speedsters suffered blows in last week’s RaboDirect Pro12 defeat to Cardiff Blues in the Welsh capital.

Wales wing Brew was forced off the field for the second game running after receiving a bang on the dead leg he suffered against Exeter.

Chavhanga played all 80 minutes but the South Africa international limped off at the Cardiff City Stadium after a blow to his right ankle.

Neither trained with the squad on Tuesday but the Dragons expect both to receive the all-clear for tomorrow’s encounter.

Will Harries has also been given the green light to feature after his late withdrawal from the matchday squad against the Blues.

The 24-year-old had a small reaction to his return in the European double-header against Exeter following seven months on the sidelines after knee ligament damage.

Matthew Pewtner took his place on the bench last weekend and the 21-year-old has been named in a 27-man squad as cover for Brew and Chavhanga.

The back three will soon be bolstered by the return of another player from injury.

Northern Irishman Jamie Smith took a full part in training on Tuesday for the first time since damaging his hamstring and should get some game time in the next couple of weeks.

The 23-year-old has made just one Dragons appearance – off the bench against Leinster – since his summer arrival from Ulster.

The Dragons have named an extended squad for the clash with the Scarlets with the 23 that were in action against the Blues joined by Harries, flanker Lewis Evans, hooker Rhys Buckley and scrum-half Jon Evans.

The latter has recently returned to action with Bedwas in the Premiership following a hamstring injury and provides cover for Joe Bedford, who has been struggling with a bug but is expected to be fine.

Meanwhile, the Scarlets are expected to give starts to fly-half Stephen Jones and hooker Ken Owens.

The pair have recently played second fiddle to Rhys Priestland and Matthew Rees respectively but are set to spearhead the Llanelli challenge at Rodney Parade.

Scarlets head coach Nigel Davies is set to pick a much-changed side to the one that beat the Ospreys on Boxing Day.

“It is near impossible to turn around a side again in just four days after such a physical encounter as that,” he said.

“The win against the Ospreys will serve well to motivate and boost our team for the Dragons. The players know these fixtures are mini-trials for the Heineken Cup games to come.”
