NEWPORT RFC have whittled over 2,000 players down to 10 legends that will be inducted into a hall of fame.

The Friends of Newport Rugby Trust will be honouring the Black and Ambers greats as well as two administrators at a special dinner at Rodney Parade on Thursday, March 15.

The names of the inaugural inductees have not yet been announced but the likes of Arthur ‘Monkey’ Gould, Rod Snow, Dai Watkins, David Waters, Roy Burnett and Ken Jones are sure to be in the mix.

The difficult task of picking just 10 players from those that have played since the inception of Newport in 1874 sparked fierce debate among the selection panel.

"As always it is extremely difficult to choose between players from different eras due to the ever changing face of the game and the way it is played," said FoNR spokesman Dave Tingey.

"Ultimately it has meant that some deserving names have been omitted on this occassion, though we can only stress though that this is the first of what we plan to make an annual event.

"Consequently those great servants of Newport that have been omitted this time could well feature at the next event."

The event will be held in the Bisley Stand and includes a three-course meal, speeches and an auction.

Tickets cost £25 and are available from the Rodney Parade ticket office or by ringing 01633 670690.
