NEWBRIDGE’S Bradley Pryce will come out from the cold into the red-hot atmosphere of Sheffield next weekend with a chance to become a two-time, two-weight Commonwealth champ, the Argus can reveal.

The 30-year old held the light-middleweight title between 2006 and 2009 as part of the Team Calzaghe stable.

Now training with Cwmbran’s Gary Lockett, Pryce had been set to box on the undercard of the George Groves bill this weekend that had to be cancelled.

So Pryce has now been given the call to challenge Patrick Mendy at Sheffield’s Ponds Forge Arena on Saturday, March 24, in the bill being headlined by Gary Buckland (see right).

Pryce will face an opponent already beaten four times as he steps up to middleweight to get back on the title trail.

The only drawback of the fight is that it scuppers the prospect of a romantic weekend in Paris for Mr and Mrs Lockett.

His other main boxer, Gavin Rees, defends his European lightweight title in the French capital just 24 hours before.

“I will literally be going straight from the arena to the airport to get back to Sheffield to be in Bradley’s corner, but this is a fabulous opportunity for him,” he explained.
