TEENAGER Lee Evans looks to have played his way into the Newport County team for Wembley after another storming display at AFC Barrow on Saturday.

Manager Justin Edinburgh was disappointed with the majority of his team after they ended their Blue Square Bet Premier campaign with a 3-1 defeat in the Lake District.

Goals from Andy Cook, Richie Baker and Adam Boyes and a solitary reply from Ismail Yakubu left the Exiles boss in a glum mood but there was one bright spot.

Edinburgh lavished praise on 17-year-old Evans, who put in a sparkling display in only his third start for the senior side.

“Lee was outstanding from start to finish,” he said. “I thought he ran the game and took the game to Barrow single-handedly at times.

“He certainly left a good impression on my mind looking towards the cup final.

“He’s in the front of my mind when it comes to selecting my team on May 12.”

That was more than could be said for many of his more senior players, with some playing themselves out of contention for the FA Trophy final against York City and putting their future at the club in doubt.

“The manner of the goals we conceded was very poor,” added Edinburgh. “We were sloppy.

“We did play well in the first half and we should have been out of sight but we weren’t.

“We continually create chances, don’t score them and think we’re going to win games and that is the mental attitude of the players.

“That is why some of them are going to leave this football club. It’s not good enough.

“The support was fantastic again – we brought over a hundred fans up here – and we haven’t sent them home happy.”

County ended the season in 19th place, six points clear of the bottom four, but Edinburgh is not happy to settle for survival.

“We survived by a point or two and that is why we need to have a clear out and bring the players here who have the right attitude and mental strength to succeed,” he said.

“It’s going to be a busy summer. I’m pleased we’ve only got two players on contract now because that gives us a clean canvas to work on.”
