NEWPORT County star David Pipe is hoping to make it a trophy double this week after being voted the South Wales Argus player of the year, writes Andrew Penman.

The 28-year-old has been a stellar performer in midfield and at right-back for the Exiles this season and he edged out runner-up Sam Foley to take the title decided by Argus readers.

Pipe was signed by previous manager Anthony Hudson on non-contract terms in September last year after his release from prison for wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

His fully committed performances quickly made him a fans’ favourite and he is delighted to have been recognised for his efforts in a difficult season.

“I’m very pleased to win this award,” he said. “Considering I’ve only been at the club for a short amount of time – just over half a season – and the last few years that have gone before me I’m very proud.

“You go out there and try to give your best every game and the fans are spending good money to watch you so I’m glad they’ve recognised the effort I’ve put in.”

Now Caerphilly-born Pipe, a former Wales international and captain of the Under-21s, is aiming to get his hands on the FA Trophy by beating York City in the final on Saturday.

“It’s still not really sunk in yet that we’ll be playing at Wembley but we’re going to go flat out. We’re not going there to lose,” he added.

“The few days leading up to it is when it become real and when we touch that grass at one of the best arenas of the world it’s going to be amazing.

“I’ve played in front of massive crowds before at places like Leeds and I’ve captained my country against England.

“Things like that stick in your memory but Saturday will definitely be the biggest day of my career so far.”

As an experienced head the ex-Coventry and Bristol Rovers player will have a big role to play, something he’s well aware of.

“I know what it feels like a little bit so I will try to help the young lads through such a big game,” he said.

“I think the passion will be a massive factor for us. We’re a group with big heart and the fans will be backing us all the way.

“The staff players and fans will be doing everything we can to bring home the trophy.”

On a possible new contract Pipe said: “We spoke and I’ve shaken the manager’s hand.

“I’ve not seen the paperwork yet and it’s not all signed and sealed but hopefully we can sew it up in the next few days.”
