NEW Wales intermediate teams manager Geraint Williams insists the new FAW facility at the Newport International Sports Village is integral to hopes of a successful future for Welsh football.

The ex-Derby and Bristol Rovers player was yesterday confirmed as the new boss for Wales’ age grade sides in succession to Brian Flynn.

The 13-capped Wales midfielder admits he never got to enjoy facilities as good as the ones being built at Newport which will become the new official home of Welsh football.

“The Newport facility is integral to everything we are trying to do, we are trying to work to the same strategy Chris will with the senior squad and the likes of him and me could have only dreamed of such a great facility,” he said.

The former Colchester and Leyton Orient boss expressed his pride at the appointment.

“It’s a very big job. Obviously it’s the conveyor belt for the national team,” said Williams.

“We’ve got to make sure we’re out there finding everyone that’s eligible to represent Wales and then making sure that we get them into the system and work with them.

“It’s a dual role. Yes, it’s all about training and development but the objective of every game (is) we want to go out and win.”

Williams has yet to confirm his backroom team but says he will consult Flynn’s staff and assess the situation with national team manager Chris Coleman and coach Osian Roberts.
