ENZO Calzaghe is determined to save Amir Khan’s boxing career and is in talks with the fighter’s father about working with him, the Argus can exclusively reveal.

The legendary trainer, who was in the corner of all 46 of son Joe’s unbeaten fights, believes he is the man to rescue Khan, who has many critics calling on him to retire following his fourth round stoppage defeat to Danny Garcia in Las Vegas last weekend.

Still only 25, Khan insists he won’t hang up the gloves but has hinted he may work with another trainer because current coach Freddie Roach divides his time between Khan and icon of the sport Manny Pacquiao.

It emerged yesterday that Calzaghe was keen on taking over from Roach and the Argus has learned that he has already talked with Shah Khan, Amir’s father.

The two initially discussed the prospect of working together following Khan’s first career loss back in 2008 against Breidis Prescott.

Those negotiations fell down because Calzaghe, who at the time had a thriving stable, was unwilling to travel to accommodate Khan.

However, having just renewed his licence and following his split with former cruiserweight world champion Enzo Maccarinelli, Calzaghe is now ready and willing to take on Khan and will happily travel to Bolton to do so.

Calzaghe contacted Shah Khan and was promised that the matter would be discussed with Amir next week. We can also reveal that Calzaghe’s agent has made overtures to Khan’s promoters, Golden Boy, during a pre-arranged trip to Los Angeles this week.

Calzaghe is well regarded over the l continued from back pond having become the first British trainer to win the Boxing Writers’ trainer of the year accolade after leading Maccarinelli and Gavin Rees to world titles.

"I would even go to America if Amir wanted or I would travel to Bolton and I’ve made that clear to Shah Khan, his father," Calzaghe told the Argus.

"I rate Amir as a fighter, his speed and his movement are genuinely world class and the notion that he has a weak chin is a total myth.

"I could get him back to a world title level and make him one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world because he has the talent.

"I honestly believe I could make him unbeatable."

Calzaghe feels Khan’s trainer Roach has used the Calzaghe style of training with Khan and it hasn’t worked.

"You watch Amir and the reason he got knocked out is his feet are constantly in the air, he’s constantly bouncing behind his shots and that’s what Joe used to do and how Gavin Rees used to fight," he explained.

"But Amir should be planting his feet and that’s obvious, but Freddie Roach doesn’t have a plan B for Amir and that’s equally obvious.

"He is almost copying Joe’s style and he shouldn’t. I’d love to share my ideas with Amir and if he speaks to me I think he’ll realise we could get him back to where he wants to be."

A split between Khan and Roach isn’t official but looks to be in the offing.

"I need a trainer with me 100%," said Khan.

"Freddie is a very busy guy and he is busy because he is a great trainer and is one of the best and biggest names out there. I don’t really want to be sharing.

"When I’m not there I don’t mind what Freddie does, but [in camp] I just need someone who is going to be with me constantly and working hard with me."
