County 2 Southport 1

NEWPORT County AFC came from behind to seal all three points with a dramatic 92nd minute winner from substitute Ben Swallow.

Southport started superbly and could have led by more than one goal at the break after Chris Lever had scored from the penalty spot on 18 minutes.

But County felt they should have had at least one spot kick of their own in a frantic first 45 minutes and they battled back superbly after the break.

Top scorer Aaron O'Connor levelled with his eighth goal of the season 14 minutes from time before sub Swallow sent the Rodney Parade crowd into raptures with a left foot screamer at the death.

The Exiles remain top of the Blue Square Bet Premier league and travel to AFC Telford on Tuesday night.

Well done County Ben you were brilliant. Being an old timer I was so sorry to hear about Lennie Weare one of counties best keepers. I can remember me and my mates saying he should have played for Wales. I remember Alf Sherwood Ray Wilcox Johnstone coming from orient and Rock Hudson of course. a bit of sadness on an otherwise great day.

I wonder if the Southport manager found the result 'hard to swallow'

County were totally outplayed in the first half and lucky not to be 4 down by half time. I really cant understand the system using four central midfielders - who didn't even dominate the midfield. The passing football of the first 5 matches seems to have been surrendered in favour of banging the ball in the air to Louis/Minshull.

On the upside - a great effort by the County second half as Southport shut up shop and a stunning finish by Swallow. Homegrown youngsters Evans and Hughes the best on the park. Good teams are lucky teams, well done boys - top of the league - support the County !
