NEWLY crowned Football Association of Wales player of the year Joe Allen is determined his side will reign supreme in Friday night’s ‘Battle of Britain’ clash with Scotland.

The Liverpool midfielder is one of the few Wales players to enhance their status on the international stage in the last 12 months.

Manager Chris Coleman has yet to lead his team to victory in five matches and they were hammered 6-1 in Serbia last time out.

That defeat last month, coupled with a 2-0 loss at home to Belgium in the first 2014 World Cup qualifier, means Wales are again in danger of their campaign ending before it has really begun.

But Allen says the whole squad is confident of getting their first points against the Scots at Cardiff City Stadium.

“Everyone is hungry to set the record straight after Serbia,” said the 22-year-old playmaker.

“The biggest disappointment from that game was that we gave it everything but it just didn’t happen.

“We shoulder that responsibility and there are no excuses from now on.

“We’ve got to make sure that every game we perform to the best of our abilities.”

Allen insists that the players are to blame for recent poor results and not new manager Coleman.

“When it comes down to it, when we cross the white line, it’s down to us players and in recent times it hasn’t been as good as it can be,” he admitted. “We’re going to strive to change that.

“You reflect on games like that and the most important thing is that you can learn things from it.

“We’ve had the time to analyse the Serbia match and we saw what wasn’t right on the night.

“But you look at the talent in the squad and we’ve got some top players who are capable of getting points in this group,” he added.

“It makes it difficult when you lose your first two games but we are determined to qualify.”

The former Swansea City ace says also backed the manager’s decision to install Ashley Williams as captain in place of Aaron Ramsey.

“Aaron has been a fantastic captain for us and Ash is going to be great for us as well,” he said.

“It makes no difference to us players, we’ll go out there with the same approach.

“The manager knows best and if he thinks it will help Aaron then I’m sure it will.

“He’s been playing well for Arsenal and I’m sure he’s looking forward to bringing that form to the international stage.

“I know Ash is a natural leader. You can see that at club level with Swansea and there were no worries about him getting the armband.”
