NEWPORT’S Sean McGoldrick makes his first appearance in this season’s World Series of Boxing on Saturday hoping to restore Welsh pride.

As the competition enters week 11 not one Welsh fighter has tasted victory so far.

For the Lionhearts Ashley Williams has been beaten four times, Andrew Selby once and McGoldrick’s St Joseph’s stablemate Joe Cordina also lost his one fight.

And London 2012 silver medalist Fred Evans has lost both of his bouts as he represents Italia Thunder this season.

McGoldrick is out to change that when the Lionhearts take on the Algeria Desert Hawks in Blida this weekend.

The 23-year-old bantamweight, who won gold at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi and bronze in Glasgow last summer, won three fights the last time the Lionhearts participated in WSB in 2012-13.

McGoldrick is joined in the team by fellow Commonwealth Games medalists Antony Fowler and Sam Maxwell as well as Harvey Horn at light-flyweight and French heavyweight Abdoulaye Diane.

Fowler, who is currently ranked joint-fifth in WSB’s middleweight rankings, will be looking to return to winning ways after losing his last bout on points to Uzbekistan’s Hurshidbek Normatov of the Ukraine Otamans.

Maxwell is aiming to build on a superb performance in his last match when he comprehensively outboxed Ukraine’s Mger Oganisian.

Horn will be looking for his first win of the season after boxing well on his debut despite losing to the tough and experienced Mexican, Joselito Velazquez.

Diane is also aiming to break his duck as the Lionhearts take-on a team they defeated at home when wins for Jack Bateson, Ekow Essuman, Joe Joyce and a walkover for John Newell, gave the British team a 4-1 victory.

That was one of only two wins for the Brits in ten matches, the other coming on the opening week at home to China Dragons, and they are currently seventh out of eight teams in Group A.

The Lionhearts have lost out to Ukraine and the Morocco Atlas Lions home and away, the Russian Boxing Team, Cuba Domadores and China Dragons away from home and the Mexico Guerreros at home.

Saturday’s match will be screened on BT Sport 2 at 10pm and more details on the Lionhearts and WSB are available online at worldseriesboxing.com or by following the team on twitter at @Brit_Lionhearts.
