DAVID Walker was given the captaincy of Pontypool ABC on the same night he picked up the Gary Gething award for his achievements throughout the boxing season.

The heavyweight, who represented Wales at the prestigious Three Nations Championship in Scotland earlier in the year, will have Shane Jones as his vice-captain.

Four-time Welsh champion Jones deservedly scooped the award for the club’s most successful boxer at the annual presentation bash, which was hosted by Trevethin and Penygarn Working Men’s Club.

Jones also landed the coveted boxers’ boxer trophy to make it an award double.

The most improved senior boxer was middleweight Sean Williams.

Three-fight novice Williams won his first two contests by way of knockout and demonstrated in his third bout that he doesn’t just rely on power, skilfully boxing his way to a points victory.

Hywell Cooper was rewarded for his efforts this year by receiving the most improved junior award. Jaydon Torrance was voted most improved schoolboy while the most improved minor accolade went to Evan James.

The schoolboy captaincy was bestowed upon Kieron James.

Pontypool’s next show will be at the working men’s club on Friday, November 11.

Boxing sessions are run on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 5pm and experienced boxers and novices are welcome to attend the club’s impressive gym at Unit 6, Pavilion Industrial Estate, Pontypool.

Fitness sessions based around strength, conditioning and boxing training are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Men’s classes start at 6pm and female-only classes commence at 7.30pm.
