TRAINER Tony Borg is eyeing up a big 2017 for world champion Lee Selby, as a potential showdown against fellow British star Carl Frampton edges ever closer.

Talk of a clash between IBF world featherweight king Selby, trained by Borg at St Joseph’s Boxing Club in Newport, and WBA ‘Super’ champion Frampton has been mooted for some time.

Barry boxer Selby and Northern Ireland’s Frampton fight on the same bill in Las Vegas next month and if both emerge triumphant then they could be set for a mouth-watering battle later next year.

But Borg, who also trains the likes of Lee’s brother Andrew, Craig Evans, Sean McGoldrick and Joe Cordina, knows how important it is the two men get the job done at the MGM Grand on January 28.

Frampton defends his title in a rematch with Leo Santa Cruz after getting the better of the previously unbeaten Mexican in Brooklyn in July.

Selby, 29, makes the third defence of his crown against Argentina’s former WBA champion Jonathan Victor Barros.

“For Lee to fight Frampton, Lee would have to win his fight and Frampton would have to beat Santa Cruz,” said Borg.

“If Santa Cruz beats Frampton then that would make it one win all and I’d imagine there is a clause in the contract for a decider.

“So if Santa Cruz wins then it would throw a spanner in the works for a fight between Lee and Frampton.

“But if Lee wins and Frampton does then it is set up for a big fight between those two, probably in Belfast I would think.”

The showdown with Barros, 32, unbeaten in seven fights dating back to May 2013, is Selby’s last of his current contract with Matchroom Sports.

Meanwhile, Borg has confirmed that former Celtic and Welsh title challenger Tony Pace and ex-Welsh amateur champion Lance Cooksey have joined his stable of boxers in Newport.

Borg also added that newly-turned professionals Sean McGoldrick and Joe Cordina are set to continue their training at St Joseph’s after opting to switch from the amateur ranks.

Borg reckons the Commonwealth Games medallists will make their pro debuts by March at the latest.
