CEFN Fforest fighter Nathan Cleverly may finally get a shot at Juergen Braehmer this year as he moves back down to light-heavyweight in search of another world title.

Cleverly lost his WBO light-heavyweight world title to Sergey Kovalev in August 2013 and his move up to cruiserweight ended with defeat to Tony Bellew in Liverpool in November last year.

Elusive German Braehmer was set to defend his WBO belt against Cleverly back in 2011 but pulled out of the fight and eventually vacated the title that Cleverly went on to win.

The pair almost met again in 2013 when Cleverly was champion and the Argus understands that they could be finally set to clash late this year.

Braehmer is now the WBA champ having won the vacant belt in 2013 and defended it successfully against Enzo Maccarinelli in April last year.

The 36-year-old looks set to meet former Clev victim Robin Krasniqi first with their all-German world title bout set for Rostock in March.

Krasniqi lost a one-sided contest via unanimous points decision to Cleverly at Wembley Arena in April 2013 but is now mandatory challenger for Braehmer’s belt after four successive wins.

And if Braehmer sees off Krasniqi he could finally take on Cleverly for his world title towards the end of this year.

The Gwent fighter is likely to return to the ring in March or April on the same Cardiff bill that should see St Joseph’s star Lee Selby take on Russian Evgeny Gradovich for his IBF featherweight world title.

And promoter Eddie Hearn says he has all-but secured the deal for Cleverly’s world title challenge later in the year despite the disappointing defeat to Bellew.

“I’ve spoken to Nathan numerous times since the fight, more than I’ve spoken to Bellew,” said the Matchroom Boxing chief, who was in Las Vegas with Cleverly last month for the Amir Khan fight.

“I said before the fight that the winner will go on to fight for a world title and probably the loser would too.

“I was in Vegas with Nathan and it looks like I’ve landed him a world title fight as well.

“I will bring him back at light-heavyweight and he will fight for a world title before the end of the year, probably in September. It’s virtually already done.”
