THE quartet of Gwent-trained boxers in action at the Rumble in the Rhondda show in Tylorstown all preserved their unbeaten records.

St Joseph’s fighters Gavin Gwynne, Kyle Jones and Ashley Brace and Blaenavon’s Mason Jones eased to comfortable victories.

Performance of the night belonged to Ebbw Vale’s Brace who took a huge step up in class when facing Bulgaria’s former three-time world champion Galina Koleva Ivanova.

Brace, 25, was backed by a vocal army of supporters at Rhondda Fach Sports Centre and her fans witnessed a superb six-round display from the Gwent bantamweight.

The rugged Ivanova, a veteran of 32 bouts going into the fight, utilised every bit of her experience in a fiery contest that was not for the faint-hearted.

Brace, no doubt spurred on by her band of supporters, stood toe-to-toe with the Bulgarian and made sure she had the last word in every exchange.

The fact that Brace, who took her record to 5-0, didn’t lose a single round should be an indicator as to her future potential.

Lightweight Gwynne, from Treharris, dominated Birmingham’s Yaddollah Ghasemi, forcing the referee to stop the bout in the fourth and final round.

The speed, accuracy and volume of Gwynne’s educated flurries proved too much for his gutsy opponent.

Gwynne may have only fought twice in the paid ranks but he is definitely one to watch out for.

Kyle Jones makes a two-hour round trip from Pontypridd to train at St Joseph’s and, judging by the super-lightweight’s performances to date, it’s time well spent.

He made it seven straight victories when outclassing Jack Green over four rounds and is now expected to fight for the Welsh title in the next few months.

The hugely popular Mason Jones took on Swindon’s Paul Cummings in a four-round super-welterweight contest.

Like Gwynne, Jones was making only his second outing as a pro in the Rhondda, and the latter had prepared for the fight with an intensive training camp which included a two-week spell at Floyd Mayweather’s world famous TMT gym in Las Vegas.

While there he sparred former super-welterweight world champion Ishe Smith and by all accounts more than held his own.

Jones demonstrated that hard work always pays off as he comfortably won all four rounds against his much taller opponent, with the long body of Cummings proving a good target for the Welshman’s meaty hooks.

The 21-year-old wishes to thank his sponsors, without who he would not have been able to dedicate so much time to his training and dietary regimes.

“Everyone in Blaenavon is behind me, it has been great” he said. “I’m thankful for everyone that has helped by buying a ticket to watch me box and to my sponsors P and P Builders, Rolls Royce Bulldogs, Tatami Fightwear, Rhys Jones PT and Patent Seekers.

“Their financial help and support has enabled my trainer Lyndon James and I to travel over to Las Vegas.

“I’ve also had several weeks in London training at West Ham boxing club. With their help I am able to live and train as a fully professional athlete. I’m very grateful.”

The quartet could be in action again in December although a date and venue is to be confirmed.
