I HAVE been attempting to keep track of events at Newport County AFC from across the Channel this week and it seems to have been an eventful few days.

After Andrew Hughes’ departure for Peterborough United and the signing of Joss Labadie from Dagenham & Redbridge, County announced today that four more players are to leave Rodney Parade.

While Danny Holmes, Medy Elito and John-Christophe Ayina had their moments, the biggest loss is undoubtedly Captain Mark Byrne.

The skipper has always spoken of how much he has enjoyed being a part of the club and he was certainly a player that manager Warren Feeney wanted to tie down to a new deal.

Feeney has taken a hard line with the quartet and withdrawn the offers of new contracts that were made on May 10.

And, while losing Byrne is a big blow, you can’t blame the Exiles boss for cutting his losses.

He can’t afford to wait forever for an answer with potential replacements being snapped up left, right and centre.

I don’t know the ins and outs of the negotiations but, ultimately, if somebody doesn’t want to play for County then Feeney and the club are better off without them.
