BLACKWOOD are into the last eight of the Gwalia Welsh Cup after stunning Premier League Ynysygerwn on their own patch.

The Glamorgan and Monmouthshire League side romped to a 63-run success – and once again Dan Wilkinson played a starring role.

The Yorkshireman, Division One player of the month for May, struck 105 in Blackwood’s total of 198 from their 40 overs with opener Neil Reardon providing support with a 42.

And the bowling unit then did their stuff to bowl out their hosts for 135 with Kieran Howells (64) the only batsman to make a score of note.

Blackwood didn’t let Ynysygerwn develop any partnerships with Reardon bagging three wickets for the cost of 22, Richard Matthews, Robert Matthews and Joe Roberts claiming two scalps apiece and Wilkinson one.

It means they will take on Port Talbot, who edged out Cardiff, at the New Mansel on July 21.

That will be another tough game – but a winning streak that goes back to May 25 will means it would be foolish to write off Blackwood.

“It was excellent to get a win against a Premier League side in Ynysygerwn and it goes to show that we can beat anyone on our day,” said chairman Eric Reardon.

“We are unbeaten in four in the league as well so it just goes to show that winning becomes a habit.

“It’s great for a club of our size to get to the quarter-finals and hopefully the run can continue.”

Blackwood will be joined in the last eight by the winner of the Usk versus Panteg clash. They will take on Penarth while Swansea face Ammanford and, up north, Llandudno are up against the winner of Northop and Hawarden Park.
