NEWPORT beat the weather and struggling Tondu at Spytty Park in the Premier Division of the Thomas, Carroll South Wales Cricket League and remain well in the title race.

Tondu won the toss and opted to bat and were soon in trouble at 90-6, but Gavin Vigus (52) staged a recovery helped by Alex Jones (23) and Tondu were able to reach 160 all out.

Kyle Tudge took 3-23 for Newport, Ryan Aingworth 3-26 and Michael Clayden 2-17.

Clayden then held the Newport reply together with 52 not out, Glamorgan’s Gareth Rees made 49 and Imran Hassan (44 n.o) and Clayden took them to 163-2. Jones took 2-46 for Tondu.

Blackwood’s game against Abergavenny and Sudbrook’s match at Pentyrch were victims of the weather, but Croesyceiliog entertained St Fagans and probably wish they hadn’t.

After winning the toss and putting the Saints in Croesy toiled as the visitors piled up 305-9.

Owain Hopkins scored 90, Prateesh Rajpal 52 and Gareth Slade 32, while for Croesy, Mike Beacham took 3-74 and Rhys Jones 2-61.

Croesy were soon in trouble, and despite the best efforts of Beacham (36) and Jones (26) they were dismissed for 101. Rajpal took 4-15 for St Fagans and Scott Edmed 4-23.

Cardiff had much the better of a drawn game against Penarth at the Diamond Ground and went top of the table after Sully suffered a shock home defeat by Usk.

In a game reduced to 35 overs, Sully decided to bat and were bowled out for 143. Rhett Jones was top scorer with 31, Ryan Sylvester made 21, Andrew Davies 15 and Lloyd Smith 14.

Ollie James took 4-31 off 10 overs, Shaun Kelly 4-32 off eight and Tom Robinson 1-52 off eight while Ian Clayton held on to four catches.

James then scored 43 and Mark Birrell led Usk home by eight wickets with an unbeaten 83. Sylvester took 1-37 off six overs for Sully and Ian Nicholson 1-49 off six.

At Chepstow not a drop of rain fell and the second-placed team in Division One maintained their successful run by beating Brecon.

In a 48-over game, Brecon were bowled out for 161 with Andy MacDonald making 45 not out and Giles Smith 32.

Tom Jackson led the way for Chepstow with 4-39 off 10 overs, Glen Eglington had 3-31 off 10 and Rhodri Fawsitt 2-26 off nine.

Chepstow needed only 30 overs to get the runs as opener Carwyn James cracked a brilliant 97 not out, Zac Watson made 23 and David Bennett was 27 not out when Chepstow reached 162-4. Kieran Marmian took 2-17 off six overs for Brecon.

Rogerstone’s revival continued as they made it two wins in consecutive weeks when they defeated Miskin Manor in a game reduced to 30 overs. Rogerstone went in first and scored 221-3 thanks to a magnificent 101 by Andrew Harris helped by Zofi Ali (48) and Mohammed Arif (30 n.o).

The home side managed 161-7 in their reply with Carl Whiteley (35) their top scorer as John Berry took 2-21, Asif 2-24 and Jamie Suller 2-45.

Newport Fugitives lost their basement battle against Radyr at High Cross and slumped to the bottom of the table.

Radyr scored 215 all out with Moshsin Arif blasting seven sixes and nine fours in a blistering 98. Chris Peacock (26) and Dave Skirrow (24) were next best. James Didcot took 3-7 for the Fugitives and Steve Durston 3-32.

The Fugitives have been struggling with injuries all season and their woes continued as Chris Bridges, playing his first match of the season, needed a runner to make his top score of 56.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, his partner Matthew Evans also got injured so there was the rare occurrence of two batsmen both with runners trying their best to avoid being run out.

Evans got 27 and Durston 21 and Radyr kindly gave them 32 extras, but it wasn’t enough and the Fugitives were bowled out for 174. John Corden took 4-30 for Radyr and Nick O’Neill 2-35.

After a shaky start to the season Panteg have hit a winning streak and it continued against visitors Malpas who have now lost their last two matches.

Panteg batted first and scored 267-5 with Ian Bird making 67, Mohammed Ali Bukari 42, Barney Worrad 38 and John Glover 36 not out. Paul Evans took 2-65 for Malpas.

Malpas made a determined effort with Micky Martin making 92 and Evans 55, but Panteg held the aces and Malpas were 232-9 at the close. Glover took 2-38 for Panteg and Bird 2-43.

The Division Two games at Ton Pentre & Porth and Vale were cancelled because of rain and Ebbw Vale had Creigiau on the rack when their match at Eugene Cross Park had to be abandoned.

Creigiau batted and were 97-6 with Wyn Innes getting 33 and Lewis James taking 13-5-29-4 and Ben Evans 6-1-29-2 when the umpires called a halt.

Like Rogerstone, Machen made it two wins out of two games to climb off the bottom of the table.

Visitors Ponthir were bowled out for 86 with their top scorer Mike Holcombe (18) as Mohammed Farid took 5-40 for Machen and Alan Norman 5-42.

Gareth Hibbs departed for 35 but Lawrence Innes saw Machen to a nine-wicket win with 25 not out.

Welsh Asians stay top of the table after accounting for their local rivals Cardiff Gymkhana by six wickets.

Blackwood’s game in the Premier Division Second XI at Avenue Road was abandoned with Abergavenny on 51-1 chasing Blackwood’s 246-8.

Neil Reardon made a brilliant 104 in the Blackwood innings, Richard Evans 30 and Rob Bailey 26 while Mike DeVoy took 2-25 for Abergavenny and Andy Timpson 2-43.

St Fagans met struggling Chepstow and managed 156-9 going in first. Simon Holliday scored 55 and Nick Allen 32, while Mitchell Harris took 2-22 for Chepstow.

Only Rob Hopkins (17) made runs when Chepstow replied and top scorer was Wides with 18 but they managed to hang on for a draw at 90-9. Luke Vincent took 3-9 for the Saints and Leremy Lawler 2-13.

Sudbrook took on Pentyrch at the Deepweir and batted first and scored 272-8. Lewis Cook made 69, Richard Lund 56, Greg Shaw 50 and Matthew Phillips 47 while Mike Edwards took 3-33 off six overs for Pentyrch and Dave Tallis 2-41 off 10.

Steve Matthews got 73 for Pentyrch and David Dabson 43 but John Burrows (3-20) and Rob Simmonds (3-21) had them hanging on for a draw at 188-9.

The mid-table match at Usk saw visitors Sully put in and they made a useful 262-6 thanks to Matt Thomas (93), David Goodway (44), James Langworth (28) and Owen Sullivan (26).

Richard Rees took 3-29 for Usk and Sanjay Thapan 2-35.

Tony Kear (58), Thapan (48) and Henry Lewis (39) all got runs when Usk went in but Terry Williams took 3-44 for Sully, Steve Hood 2-20 and Goodway 2-22 and Usk were bowled out well short on 197.

Barry stunned Division One Second XI leaders Panteg, who batted first and got 228-7 with Gareth Meredith making 46, James Lewis 43 and Kyle Hazzard 40. Billy Uswald took 3-36 for Barry.

Nathan Baker then led the Barry run chase with a sparkling 98 not out and Damon Leeke made 94 as Barry got the runs with Steve Clarke taking 2-46 for Panteg.

Brothers Steve (106 n.o) and John (50) Kenchington got most of the runs when Brecon reached 206-2 at home to Croesyceiliog.

John Lewis scored 61 for Croesy and Adrian Webber 55 but their ninth batsman was run out going for the winning run off the final delivery and the match ended in a tie. Hoovers managed just nine overs before their game against Newport Fugitives had to be abandoned, while bottom club Ponthir were defeated at home by Miskin Manor.

Welsh Asians did the double by beating local rivals Cardiff Gymkhana in Division Two Second XI, where Malpas maintained second place behind leaders Radyr, whose match was abandoned.

At Bettws Lane, Malpas went in first against Vale and amassed a huge 338-5. Dave Martin was run out off the last ball of the innings for a marvellous 99 while Greg Simmonds (68) and James Perrett (62) put on 140 for the first wicket. James Green took 3-109 off 11 overs for Vale who hardly helped their cause by giving away 58 extras including 32 wides.

Captain Carl Brooks did his best with a top score of 39 but Vale collapsed to 91 all out.

Machen managed 154 all out at Rogerstone.

Jamie Harley scored a superb 91 when Rogerstone replied and Lawrence Green got 28 as Rogerstone reached the target with seven wickets to spare.
