MONMOUTHSHIRE cyclist Lewis Oliva helped Great Britain to a second-place finish in the Track World Cup Series after the final round in Cali, Colombia.

Team USN star Oliva, who hails from Devauden, was competing for Great Britain and finished sixth in the team sprint.

He and teammates Matt Crampton and Jonny Biggin missed out on a second ride with the top four moving on to the next round.

In the keirin, Oliva was Great Britain’s sole representative and comfortably won the first round.

But the 22-year-old finished fourth in the second round and went through to the minor final where he contested for seventh place before eventually finishing tenth overall.

Oliva qualified in ninth place in the men’s sprint in 10.079 and faced Australia’s Patrick Constable.

The Aussie had qualified considerably slower than Oliva but got the better of his rival at the second attempt, overpowering him to the line and dumping the Welsh ace out of the competition.

At the conclusion of this season’s UCI Track World Cup series Great Britain finished second with 3704 points, with Germany taking first on 4037.5.

The young Team USN riders faced strong competition with more than 30 teams competing across the competition.

In the women’s team pursuit Emily Kay, Manon Lloyd, Emily Nelson and Amy Roberts recorded a time of 4:42.472, which placed them tenth overall after all 17 teams had finished.

The top eight teams progressed to the next round, with Team USN missing out on a qualification spot.

In the women’s omnium Kay got off to a good start with a personal best in the individual pursuit and finished eighth in the scratch race.

After a crash marred the elimination race, Kay slipped down the standings to finish 18th overall in the omnium.

Team USN will return to competition at the Revolution Series in Glasgow on Saturday, January 31.
