NEW Monmouth Town manager Steve Jenkins is ideally suited to his role, according to fellow former Wales international Andy Legg.

The Kingfishers only just missed out on promotion to the Welsh Premier League last term and have turned to former Exiles favourite Jenkins to complete the job next season.

The 16-time Wales cap played 83 times for Newport County AFC between 2006-2009 and also coached at the Exiles before a stint with Legg at Llanelli.

The much-travelled defender is best known for playing spells with Swansea and Huddersfield and his long-time friend Legg, now a BBC pundit, is certain Jenkins can make a big impact in management.

“I think Steve is ideally suited to management, if I am honest he’s probably more suited to it than I ever was,” he said.

“He’s very single minded, he knows what he wants, he’s firm – whereas because I knew the players as friends I could be a little bit soft – and Steve won’t mind who he upsets as long as it means getting the right results.

“He’ll have eyes on promotion and nothing else, I have no doubt about that.”

Legg, himself a former Swansea, Cardiff and Newport player, not to mention a Wales international, thinks Jenkins’ varied experience will also prove an asset for the Kingfishers.

“Steve has seen so many sides of the game, he’s been an international, played in the Championship, Leagues One and Two, the non-league and in the Welsh Premier, he’s seen a lot,” Legg said.

“The players will respect him instantly because of that. It all bodes well for Monmouth, I believe they can go up next year with Steve in charge.”

Monmouth chairman Lee Robson is equally enthused.

“I could do the usual flannel about being sure Steve will take us up a notch etc. but I think that’s self evident. The challenge for us is to match his ambitions,” he said. “We’ve got great people around the club who can and will step up to the plate.”
