David Pipe leaves Newport County

South Wales Argus: GONE: David Pipe has left Newport County GONE: David Pipe has left Newport County

FORMER Newport County AFC captain David Pipe has been released by the club with immediate effect.

A statement released this evening reads: "Newport County AFC and David Pipe have reached a mutual agreement to end the contract between both parties and the player is free to explore other opportunities with immediate effect.

"This has not been an easy decision and it is credit to all parties involved that an amicable decision has been reached in a professional manner.

"Pipey has been an integral part of the club since joining in September 2011, amassing over a century of appearances, and leading the Exiles to Wembley appearances in successive seasons.

This culminated in lifting the Football Conference Play-Off trophy last May and returning the ‘County’ to the Football League.

"The dedicated defender was instrumental in ensuring League football returned to the City of Newport for the first time in 25 years and the proud Welshman was also named in the ‘Conference’ Team of the Year for 2012/13.

County Manager Justin Edinburgh said: "I would like to thank David for all his hard work and effort during our time we have worked together, he has been an excellent pro and I wish him all the very best in the future.

"The club would also like to place on record its gratitude for the services provided to Newport County AFC by David and wish the player all the best with his future ventures and he will always be welcome at the County."

Exiles striker Aaron O'Connor said: “David is a good friend of mine from his Notts County days and I talked to him before joining the club. He’ll be missed."

And Christian Jolley added: “I’m sad to see Pipey go; he's been a big part of our success over the past two years.”

Manipulated by the club this season and backed into a corner he couldn't get out of. Big shoes to replace, not only on the playing side, but also on the leadership side. Whoever comes in will be under far more pressure than they would have been had this been handled better.

Hopefully next season's captain has already been lined up, because there sure as hell aren't any leaders in our squad at the moment (other than Flynn of course, who is also leaving).

County legend there is no doubt, however JE's judgement is good enough for me. He is with the players all week and perhaps a freshening up of the squad will do the club no harm. It is a decision that will have not been taken lightly by the back room staff. Keep the faith.

Yes, David Pipe has been a good servant of the Club and will forever remain a popular figure in our memories. That said, his performances were declining and a lot of supporters, myself included, preferred to see Jackson playing in his position. There can be no sentiment in football as it is a result based business, and JE has had to make this difficult decision, along with others to come, if he is to successfully build a Team more equipped to challenge for promotion next season. One of those situations where JE is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't, who would be a football manager?

Gutted about this.
In the time I've been watching County he's easily the best captain we've had, and I've never seen a player with the same passion and determination for the cause that he has. He's the kind of player you need when the chips are down, and he'll be really missed.
It's a real shame that we now won't have a chance to say goodbye to him properly and give him the ovation of thanks he deserves for his services to Newport County FC.
He'll always be a club legend and we wouldn't be back in the Football League without him, simple as that. Pipey we salute you.
