Edinburgh knows he'll be sacked if losing run continues

NEWPORT County boss Justin Edinburgh knows he will be sacked if his side can’t reverse their poor start to the season.

The Exiles have been beaten in all three of their League Two clashes this season and were also knocked out of the Capital One Cup at the hands of Championship outfit Reading.

And that’s in complete contrast to Burton Albion, tomorrow’s visitors to Rodney Parade, who have won all four fixtures this term, including success in the cup against Wigan Athletic, FA Cup finalists in the past two seasons.

County’s poor form has led to a section of supporters venting their frustration on the Argus website, and Edinburgh has acknowledged his position could come under scrutiny.

However, the former Rushden manager is certain the Exiles can and will bounce back and the 14th longest reigning boss in English football expects to remain in charge at Rodney Parade for a while yet.

“I understand there is pressure, but what I do, being a football manager, isn’t really pressure, pressure is when you can’t pay your bills or things like that,” he explained.

“I put pressure on myself because I don’t like losing and the manner of the goals we are conceding is a concern.

“I enjoy what I do, that’s why I do it, but – and I’ve told the players this – the open top bus around Newport and being the toast of the town, that situation is long gone.

“Success doesn’t stay, you’re only as good as your last game and we want to put things right.

“But I believe we have a positive future and I have a belief that the players can turn it around. And if they can’t? Well then I will be sacked. But that isn’t pressure. I am quite honest about it, if I lose the next 15 games or whatever, I’ll be sacked.

“But I want to make sure this club continues to progress and is prepared for every game and we will be.”

Edinburgh admits he is getting frustrated at the observation County have won only four of their past 29 games, stretching into last season, because he feels it doesn’t fairly represent the last campaign.

“I’m being told by people that we’ve won four games out of 29, but my remit at the start of last season was to stay in the Football League, which we achieved quite comfortably and we have stepped up a level,” he said.

“Why can’t I talk about the 30 games before last Christmas, where we started so well and ended the previous season promoted? I don’t go to that to make a point because it’s irrelevant and so is the bad run last season.

“Neither the start or the end of last season is relevant. We haven’t won any in three league games and that is the statistic that counts and we desperately want to put right.”

the form from the second half of last season is not irrelevant because 75% of the current squad presided over that run and it is continuing this season with the same personnel.

lose our football league status again and it could be another 25 years before its regained, thats how precious the current status is.

Sure it will not happen but would Les stick with him that long if things got that dire
Hopefully we will play tidy on the ground football tomorrow and get a much needed result

Well said, let's keep positive and get behind the manager and the lads. There are no easy games in amongst the big boys of the football league. Teams such as Portsmouth, Luton and Plymouth Argyle are just a few of the big clubs we are trying to compete with. We haven't been outplayed in any of our matches so far, we just need to get that important first win, hopefully on Saturday, but let's not under-estimate Burton, another of the top clubs in this division. Win, draw or lose so long as the boys turn up and give their all, you can't ask any more than that. Get behind the County and stop the negativity which is only making things worse. Give the manager more time after all he is the one who got us back where we belong.

Why post this, we finished 14th last season? Finished being the operative word. We've played just 3 games & should have had points from 2. I'm not happy & I'm not clapping but give the guy a break. I thought the word supporter meant to support so what are you?

The long drawn out losing streak is a worry but that's not all of it. Many supporters are also concerned that the manager is no longer making rational decisions and doesn't know how to get out of this fix. Almost no supporter would have picked the teams he's fielded lately. I think many of us want to see 2 banks of 4 with 2 strikers and proper full backs. That's how almost every other team plays in this league.

The reason that there's no point talking about the 30 games before Christmas is because that is history and staying in the past won't win games.
Why can't they ever defend a lead.

We are extremely lucky to have a 'family' club such as Newport County. Consider yourselves fortunate, that you are not supporting a club like Cardiff City, who, it appears, released a 'dossier' of alleged misdoings by Malky McCay, just as he was being considered for the Crystal Palace job. How very convenient. What a nasty, spiteful thing to do! Yep, no matter what, we've got a great club. Let's support it!

I know we are all frustrated, but to be fair Justin's hands are tied, because of the league's policy on financial restraints etc. I'm sure 1 or 2 will be on the move soon, to help the situation.Get off Justin's back, no time for talking about him leaving, this will affect the players too. He's about as good a Manager that we'll get, just hard times at the moment. He'll get it turned around, just needs to change a few to get his right formation. But back to Saturday against Burton, we need to open up the play with Willmott and dare I once more, unleash Jolley to carve up their defence.Give him a chance Justin, get us back to that free flowing attacking way that got us up.What ever happened to that style where we went for the oppo's throats early on in games ? Some weeks ago Justin said we would be "pass masters". I know where he was coming from, but in this league that sort of slow, patient build up of passing square etc is not ideal, as you get closed down too quickly, then we are on the back foot. So please Justin,a bit of pace and width. Go on try it again, you know it makes sense.
Come on The 'Port - give it to 'em !!!!!!

It's completely unfair to blame the Board or Justin Edinburgh for the recent poor form of the 'County' it is down to the players, who just seem not to want to play for 'County'. we all know the tricks that so called professional players use when disgruntled over pay or win bonuses etc. These tactics range from taking a 2-0 lead and losing it, conceding an early goal, but putting a 'good performance, getting chances to score but wildly shooting high and wide and so on. The players need to take responsibility, they have a job that any fan would die to have and they are squandering it with their ill judged actions, after all even if 'County' went out of business, they would still have 'JOBS' with other clubs, what do they care. At 59 I have seen it all at the 'County' and it makes me sad
that players behave like the 'County players are now, either you want to play for county, if not please go!

Pidgeley, Jackson (Pipe), Yakubu, Oshiaga, Naylor, Wilmott, Chapman, Porter, Byrne, Washington, O'Connor. This team, if available, would keep County in the top six.
But Oshiaga and Naylor (loan players) we couldn't retain? Why? Were they too expensive or didn't they want to or weren't they allowed to stay? Yakubu and Oshiaga were great together. Naylor was the best reader of the game in County's squad last season but after one unhappy game against Morecambe he never got back in his best position. Pipe was let go, Jackson doesn't seem liked by the manager, Washington was sold (what did that say for our ambition). Porter and O'Connor were, admittedly, long term injury victims. So my suggested team shows JE does know a good player when he sees one, and I've never doubted that, it's just that this pre-season and start to the campaign he seems to have lost his way.

As a supporter of the County since I was 10 years old and am now 70, I don't think I am asking the earth for us to play the style of football that I know we can play, by that I mean keeping it on the ground and not hoofing it down route one.
We have the players there capable of that, and I cannot imagine JE has given them the order to use route one. That was okay when we had Washington but now our forwards are not fast enough to play that type of game.
Anyone who starts playing that type of game should be dropped, ( unless of course we are winning and trying to see the final minutes out ).
I know we are not going to win every game and there are sides in the league better than us, but as long as I can witness some good football and lots of commitment then I am quite happy to pay my money each week.

I would love to see Oshilaja back, but soon after he returned to Cardiff he was loaned out again at a higher level to Sheffield Wednesday, so that must make a return doubtful. That said, Cardiff have signed another centreback in Morrison from Reading, so he must be one step further down their pecking order.

i suspect they are passionate county followers as well ! i think you mistake this "negativitiy" as realisim .

i think these issues are best brought out into open discussion forum sooner rather than later before it does get to late .

burying your head in the sand like an ostrich may be great but when you eventually get your head out of the sand it sometimes maybe too late .

and all those other 22 " bitter and twisted people" who agreed with me will i am sure be over rodney parade supporting the county on saturday . COME ON THE COUNTY!
