Double signing for County including Wales man Darcy Blake
NEWPORT County are set to announce a double defensive capture today, with Wales international Darcy Blake making a shock move to Rodney Parade, writes Michael Pearlman.
The Argus can confirm that Blake and Charlton Athletic defender Kevin Feely (emergency loan) are set to be unveiled as County signings at training today, which is also serving as the Exiles' media day.
Injury to Byron Anthony and Ismail Yakubu has left County short defensively, but there is nevertheless set to be genuine shock that the Exiles have managed to secure a deal for Blake.
The 25-year old was released by Premier League outfit Crystal Palace this season and has played 14 times for Wales, dislodging Newport's James Collins to become a first choice starter under the late Wales manager Gary Speed.
Blake last played for Wales against Croatia in October 2012, but hasn't played a competitive game since featuring for the Eagles against Blackpool in December 2012.
However, Blake, under the guidance of Palace boss Tony Pulis (who released him) has opted to sign with County on non-contract terms.
Such is Blake's ties to the local area, it is hoped County might be able to make the deal a long-term arrangement should it suit both parties, having began his career with Cardiff City before a £350,000 move to the Eagles.
Ireland U21 international Kevin Feely also joins from Charlton, on loan.
The former Bohemians defender has had previous spells with Wimbledon and Carlisle on loan.
The Exiles now have to beat today's international registration deadline to ensure both players can feature tomorrow at Torquay.
