EXILES FUME AT PENALTY

Max Porter wins the header (5560907)

Max Porter wins the header (5560907)

NEWPORT County’s players and management were angered after a controversial penalty denied them three points against promotion chasing Burton Albion, with assistant boss Jimmy Dack claiming the visitors ‘conned’ the referee.

The Exiles produced one of their best displays of the campaign against the fourth-placed side in League Two, but couldn’t hold on to their 1-0 lead courtesy of a thunderbolt from Andy Sandell as the visitors equalised through a hotly-disputed penalty.

Former Wales international Darcy Blake appeared highly unlucky to have been adjudged to foul Dominic Knowles who seemed to go to ground very easily under pressure and both Max Porter and County assistant Jimmy Dack admitted they were dumfounded by Mr Malone’s decisions.

Manager Justin Edinburgh sought an audience with the referee at the final whistle and was too angered by the decision to speak with the Welsh media.

“It’s frustration for us, we are disappointed with the goal, we thought it was a very soft penalty and we saw it again at half time on the monitor and it didn’t change our view,” he said.

“The referee made a big decision and it was costly on our behalf.

“I’ve got to be honest, I don’t think I know what a penalty is nowadays, I really don’t, and I think it now seems to be a penalty depending on how well a player can con the referee.

“There is nothing in that incident, Darcy is standing his ground and the reaction of the Burton bench said it all, they didn’t expect the ref to give a penalty.

“We thought he might level it up, but Lee Minshull was fouled in the box later in the game and was too honest, he tried to stay on his feet so the ref didn’t give it.”

Porter also spoke for the dressing room and admitted the Exiles felt aggrieved.

“I don’t think it was a penalty, not only that but it wasn’t even a free kick in the build-up to the goal, it was given against me but I never even touched the player,” he said.

“It should’ve been stopped at source and then Darcy didn’t do a lot wrong, the player made a meal of it and we’ve paid the price.

“The referee wasn’t consistent and we feel he made a mistake. We don’t always know as players now what is or isn’t a foul, players are looking for an advantage all the time and it’s getting more difficult.

“Players like Luis Suarez, who is the best at it, use contact as a way to gain an advantage in the game and that’s making it very difficult.

“It was soft and it’s frustrating for us.”

It's annoying and frustrating but this sort of cheating (and that's what it is) is so endemic and ingrained in football these days that many just see it as part of the game so nothing will ever get done about it.

No excuses.

We have still won just three games and drawn nine from the last twenty three games, which is half of the full season.

In any other world, that is relegation form.

It's not relegation form as we've just secured our league status and are just below mid table. For our first season back after twenty five years, I'm proud of that. Next season the pitch will be sorted, we surely won't have the same luck with injuries and Justin will be wiser and more experienced. Reasons to be optomistic.

Please try to understand that calling a fellow supporter a troll when they are just stating an honest opinion only demonstrates your ignorance. That is not what a troll is - a troll makes statements soley to annoy and provoke a reaction.

What annoyed me about the penalty is that the referee ( he doesn't deserve that description ) didn't have to make that penalty decision for two reasons:-
a) he was in no position to see what happened, and
b) his linesman was in a perfect position to make a decision but didn't give it.
It does make you wonder about officials - he certainly cost us the win yesterday, County were by far the better team and deserved all three points.

Looked like a penalty to me having seen the video. Blake pulls the player by putting his hand on his right shoulder. Blake pulls his hand away immediately after he had done it but the ref spotted what he had done and rightly gave a penalty. I'm not impressed by Blake on this occasion. His action probably cost County 2 points. Is he worth keeping if he's going to do this sort of thing?

Yes, he might have put his hand on his shoulder, but no way was it enough to bring him down.

well done to the county on staying up, I have been to about 8/9 games this season and must say the standard of refs is in line with the standard of football being played, very poor, next season the refs will be of the same standard lets hope the football is better because the county wont have the buzz of 1st season in the league to carry them through the first half of the campaign, and we all know what awaits if they carry the last 4 months form with them, its goodnight Vienna
