REVENGE MISSION: County striker Chris Zebroski should be fit to take on Morecambe again on Saturday

NEWPORT County AFC are on a revenge mission against Morecambe and danger man Kevin Ellison this weekend.

The Shrimps ended last season as bottom feeders in League Two, finishing 18th, and are amongst the bookies favourites to go down this year.

But Jim Bentley’s men beat County home and away in 2013/14 with a little help from Exiles defender Tom Naylor and some gamesmanship from wily winger Ellison.

Loan signing Naylor scored two own goals and conceded the match-winning penalty as Ellison went down and Morecambe triumphed 3-2 at Rodney Parade last September.

In the return match in Morecambe in March, Naylor scored the opening goal but was then sent off when he was adjudged to have brought down Ellison in the box and the Exiles suffered a 4-1 defeat.

After an appeal against the red card failed in March, County manager Justin Edinburgh told the Argus: “I firmly believe that there was no contact and the officials got conned on the evening.

“It was bad enough giving the penalty but to send Tom off as well was unacceptable. There was no contact.”

There is no Naylor in the Exiles squad to play at the Globe Arena on Saturday after he returned to parent club Derby County this summer.

But assistant manager Jimmy Dack certainly hasn’t forgotten those matches and he says the County players are looking to settle a few scores.

“They did the double over us last season and that hurt us,” said Dack. “But we did the double over Wycombe last year and they came back and bit us on the backside last week so we want to do the same to Morecambe.

“We’re going up there in a positive frame of mind and looking for three points.

“Morecambe started well last year,” he added. “I think we all remember Tommy Naylor had a tough two games against them.

“That’s why their supporters were singing ‘there’s only one Tom Naylor’ at the end of the game up there.

“But we played well against them, especially at home.

“I think they’re a good side but they tailed off towards the end of last season.

“They have a lot of experience and Ellison seems to be a thorn in our side,” he said of the 35-year-old former Hull City and Tranmere Rovers man.

“He manages the game and the referee and get fouls all the time.

“He’s a clever old pro and our players have got to learn to deal with people like that.”

Crikey - some short memories. In the home match Naylor conceded a clear penalty but he wasn't even the worst defender. They were all awful. In the away match county were outplayed and Ellison was clean through on goal. Ok not much contact by Naylor but Ellison had no reason to go down. Too many excuses and looking back. Need some positive attitude.

Ellison a real handful. Wish we had someone with his aggression in our side.

Yet more bilge BEFORE the game!

New Argus County tactic......the players sit in the middle of the pitch with a microphone and just talk the goals in!

What would you like us to report?
There is a press conference before every game at which management & players talk to the media - not just the Argus.
There is a similar arrangement after a match.
That's how it works in football at all levels of the professional game.
If reading what County players and management have to say before a match upsets you so, my advice would be to keep your blood pressure down by not reading it.

Fair enough Kevin but some of the comments coming out of the players are totally pie in the sky.
You must realise that in your position as Editor of this paper

At least Jimmy Dack's comments are not all over BBC Sport. I mean that would just give Morecambe the easiest team talk ever. Luckily Morecambe aren't playing at home in front of their own f... Yeah, nice one Jimmy :(

i get tired of all the hot air about what we are going to do this and we are going to do that..... and then they end playing playing awful and losing .

gives the impression the people saying all this dont know what they are talking about .

argus stick to reporting the facts, all this predicting from players should be kept between themselvs , and they should be concentrating on the next game not creating stories there is no stories .

time for self congratulating after a win .....
