WELSH darts youth international Lauren Cain fulfilled a childhood ambition by teaming up with her hero and a legend of the sport in her latest competition.

The Newport teenager partnered women’s darts superstar Deta Hedman in the ladies pairs at the Granite City Open in Aberdeen.

Hedman is renowned as one of the greatest female darts players of all time.

The 55-year-old Jamaican-born star has won some of the most prestigious titles in the darts world, including the World Masters, Europe Cup, Las Vegas Desert Classic and Zuiderduin Masters, and narrowly missed out on adding the World Championship in January 2012.

Hedman and 17-year-old Cain got to the final of the ladies pairs in Aberdeen but just missed out on taking the title as they were beaten 3-2.

The pair did manage to beat several Scottish internationals on the way to the final and they both missed doubles to win the final 3-1.

Cain said: “This was a huge achievement for me to reach the final of such a big darting event and also having the huge honour of playing with my darting hero Deta Hedman.

“I’d like to thank my sponsors who are all Newport businesses – Feltfab Facilities, EE Recycling and Rob Santwris World of Carpets – who help me go to the tournaments. It is greatly appreciated.”
