KYRON Duke and Jenny McLoughlin are among 11 Welsh athletes named in a 48-strong British Athletics team for next month’s IPC Athletics World Championships in Doha.

Cwmbran’s Duke, aged 22, will be competing in the F41 shot put and javelin, while Chepstow’s McLoughlin, aged 23, goes in the T37 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay.

Duke, who has achondroplasia, and McLoughlin, who has cerebral palsy, both competed at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London and have also represented Wales at the Commonwealth Games.

Duke won silver in the javelin and bronze in the shot put at the 2013 IPC World Championships in Lyon and bronze in the javelin in Christchurch two years earlier.

His older cousin Gareth Duke also has the same condition and represented Great Britain as a swimmer in the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games, winning gold, silver and bronze medals.

McLoughlin won silver in the T37 100m at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, and bronze in the sprint relay at the 2011 IPC World Championships and London 2012.

They will be joined in the GB squad by Bridgend F42 shot-put and discus star Aled Davies.

He is one of six reigning world champions named in the squad for the championships taking place between October 22 and October 31.

Davies, Hannah Cockroft, Richard Whitehead, Sophie Hahn, Hollie Arnold and Paul Blake will all be looking to retain the titles they won at the last edition of the championships in Lyon two years ago.

Paralympic head coach Paula Dunn said: “It’s a really exciting team heading out to Doha for the IPC Athletics World Championships.

“We’ve got a real mix of athletes who have won medals on the global stage as well as a number of new faces, which is really encouraging looking ahead to the future.

“Doha is a stepping stone for many of the athletes on their respective journeys to Rio, London 2017 and Tokyo 2020.

“I know the team will leave no stone unturned to deliver the sort of performances that we witnessed in Lyon two years ago.”
