CHEPSTOW sprinter Jenny McLoughlin just missed out on a medal on day one of the IPC Athletics World Championships in Doha.

The 24-year-old, who has cerebral palsy, came through her heat in the T37 100m in third place in a time of 14.40 seconds.

But McLoughlin posted a time of 14.41 in the final to finish fifth.

Fellow Brits Kadeena Cox and Georgina Hermitage won gold and silver respectively.

McLoughlin won silver in the T37 100m at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi and bronze in the sprint relay at the 2011 IPC World Championships and London 2012.

In Doha she also goes in the T37 200m and 4x100m relay.

Cwmbran shot-put and javelin ace Kyron Duke is not in action until Saturday but Bridgend star Aled Davies won gold in the men’s F42 shot put today.

Davies threw a new championship record to win Britain's first gold on day one of the 10-day event.

The 24-year-old, who had hernia surgery just 10 weeks ago, defended his title with a best of 14.95m in Doha.

Iran's Sajad Mohammadian was in front after throwing 14.54 but Davies' 14.88 in the penultimate round put him ahead.

"If you had told me 10 weeks ago that I would be here and be world champion, I'd have taken that," he said.

"I have to thank the British Athletics medical team for getting me here. The rehab was long and I only picked up the shot three or four weeks ago so to come here and deliver a half-decent throw and win, I'm happy with that."
