GWENT athletes played their part in a star-studded Welsh Indoor Championships at the National Indoor Athletics Centre in Cardiff on Sunday.

Newport Harriers sprinter Katie-Jane Priest was second in the senior women’s 200m final in a time of 25.58sec and also finished as third Welsh athlete and eighth overall in the senior women’s 60m final.

Newport’s Mica Moore (Birchfield Harriers) finished sixth in that 60m final and was the second Welsh athlete home, behind Hannah Brier.

Welsh record holder Brier (Swansea Harriers) was third overall behind Team GB athlete Asha Philip and Amy Foster.

Philip took gold, breaking the Welsh all-comers record with a time of 7.27sec in her heat and improving it again to 7.21sec in the final.

Eve Williams of Cwmbran Harriers finished third in the senior women’s 400m final.

Macey Jones, also of Cwmbran Harriers, claimed second place in the women’s triple jump.

And Millicent Fakande (Cwmbran Harriers) was third in the women’s long jump with a personal best jump of 5m37cm.

A highlight for many of the athletics fans was the senior men’s 60m, which saw Adam Gemili clocking a 6.59 personal best to beat Team GB teammate training partner James Dasaolu in an exhilarating race.

The European 200m champion had not competed since last June following the hamstring injury and this was his first indoor competition since 2012.

Gemili and Dasaolu both spoke after the race about the warm welcome they had received from Welsh Athletics and the great support shown by Welsh crowd.

Fresh from being crowned Junior Champion in the 60m earlier in the month, Cardiff AAC’s Kristian was the fastest Welshman in the senior race and the overall fastest in the 200m with a PB of 21.93sec.

David King (City of Plymouth AC) took the crown in the 60m hurdles with a PB of 7.68sec, followed closely by European under-23 110m hurdles champion David Omeregie (Cardiff AAC) who was thrilled to have recorded a new PB.

The senior men’s shot put was a fantastic watch with all four competitors encouraging one another throughout.

Gareth Winter took gold with 17.36m ahead of discus specialist Brett Morse with 15.53m and Paralympic F42 discus champion Aled Davies with 14.05m.
