GERWYN PRICE hopes his maiden PDC title is the first of many after 'The Iceman' stayed cool to overcome a nightmare start and beat world number five Peter Wright in the final of the Players Championship Seven.

Price, who was beaten by eventual winner Josh Payne in Saturday's Players Championship Six, returned to the oche with victories against Dimitri Van den Bergh, Darren Webster and Daryl Gurney in the early rounds of Sunday's £75,000 tournament in Barnsley.

The 31-year-old from Markham then went on to record a string of impressive 6-2 victories as first Matt Clark and then Ricky Evans and Benito van de Pas were brushed aside, booking Price a place in the final against Wright.

On the other side of the draw, Wright - who was a quarter-finalist on Saturday - moved nicely through the field with wins against Jeffrey de Graaf (6-2), Paul Nicholson (6-4) and then Robbie Green (6-4).

In the last 16, the Betway Premier League star needed a last leg decider to see off Devon Petersen, who himself recorded a brilliant nine-dart finish in the match only to eventually lose out.

Victories over Christian Kist and Dave Chisnall - 6-1 and 6-5 - respectively set up a place in the final for Wright.

But it was to be Price's day as the former Cross Keys RFC hooker won the final 6-3 to claim the £10,000 prize money and his first professional darts title, coming from three legs down to reel off six in a row as he claimed victory.

That composure was all the more impressive given that Wright beat him 3-0 in the 2015 World Championship and had knocked him out in the quarter-finals of last year's World Matchplay.

Price said: "I played pretty well all day but was 3-0 down in the final and thinking 'why do I always play rubbish against him?'!

"But then I won six on the bounce and it was great to get over the line in a tournament, not only to win a title but to get the money and qualification for tournaments that will help my ranking.

"I think I deserved my win and it gives me confidence for the future. I've had a decent start to the year – I made it to the final of the UK Open qualifier and lost to Michael van Gerwen – and hopefully I can push on after this and win a few more tournaments."

Price became the second player of the weekend to win their first ProTour title after Payne's victory in Players Championship Six on Saturday, and the seventh different winner from as many Players Championships so far this year.

Price will feature at the Peperami Gibraltar Darts Trophy this weekend.
