CWMBRAN Harriers’ Isobel Parry-Jones surged to 800m gold at the Welsh Athletics Championships in Cardiff on Saturday.

The Darrell Maynard-trained athlete held off the challenge of Charlotte Gaughan in the home straight to finish first by just 0.15 seconds.

Seventeen-year-old Parry-Jones, who succeeds Jade Williams as national champion, crossed the line in a time of 2:12.36mins.

Victoria Belcher of Newport Harriers just missed out on the bronze medal, finishing fourth behind Georgia Morgan at the Cardiff International Sports Stadium.

Meanwhile, Newport sprinter Mica Moore, representing Birchfield Harriers, had to settle for third in the 100m as Swansea’s Hannah Brier successfully defended her title.

Moore had qualified for the final after coming second behind eventual silver medallist Rachel Johncock in her heat – Newport Harriers’ Katie-Jane Priest also reached the final.

Brier was the class act in the medal showdown, beating Johncock by a tenth of a second, while Moore clocked 12 seconds exactly. Priest finished sixth.

Later in the day, Moore could only manage fifth place in the 100m hurdles.

There was a silver for Cwmbran Harriers’ Eve Williams in the 200m, Priest was fourth and Bethan Wakefield, previously with the Newport club, claimed bronze.

Another ex-Newport athlete, Amelia Reynolds, took the 400m title.

All in all, it was a profitable event for Cwmbran Harriers, whose third medal, another silver, in the senior championships came courtesy of Millicent Fakande in the triple jump.

As for Gwent’s men, Kyle Arnold and Abed Teweldebrhan (both Newport) were runners-up in the 110m hurdles and 5000m respectively.

Two of the pair’s clubmates, Tyler Williams and Ashley Jones, finished fifth and seventh in the 200m and 400m.

Kellen Jones nearly claimed a brace of medals – the Newport youngster struck bronze in the under-17 javelin and was fourth in the senior long jump.

Also in the under-17 events, Newport’s Owen Locke (800m) and Lisa Scarfi (300m hurdles) secured third-place finishes.

And there was also success for Blaenau Gwent AC thanks to Phoebe Brown, silver medallist in the javelin with a throw of 37.51 metres.
