NATIONAL track and field titles and a chance to stake a claim for Commonwealth Games selection will be up for grabs this weekend when Cardiff hosts the 100th senior Welsh Championships.

And a number of Gwent athletes are set to go for gold over two days of competition at the Cardiff International Sports Campus.

The action gets under way this evening before concluding tomorrow with the 200m finals, which could feature Newport Harriers trio Tyler Williams, Zoe Nash and Armani Williams.

Tomorrow will also see Welsh champions past and present take part in two separate parades to mark the event’s special anniversary.

Tyler Williams goes in the first track event on day one after Newport pole vaulter Keith Powell kicks things off for the Gwent contingent, while clubmates Gareth Knight, Owen Locke and Abed Teweldebrhan all run in the 800m.

Cwmbran Harriers duo India Jenkins and Gabrielle Fakande and Newport’s Victoria Belcher begin their quest for a medal in the 400m, as does Cwmbran’s Isobel Parry-Jones in the 800m.

Rhymney Valley AC’s versatile Fyn Corcoran competes in the javelin – he is also entered in the discus and shot put on day two.

Powell and Stuart Pearce have 100m masters medals in their sights tomorrow, with Tyler Williams doubling up and Newport threesome Joel Fowler, Ashley Jones and Carl McEwan in the 400m.

With no 3000m steeplechase, Pontypool’s Ieuan Thomas, who has twice run the ‘A’ standard for next April’s Commonwealth Games in Australia, switches to the 1500m.

As well as the 800m and 5000m, Teweldebrhan is down to run in the 1500m, as is Newport’s Remilekun Adebiyi and Blaenau Gwent AC’s Chris Prothero.

Kyle Arnold is entered in the 110m hurdles and long jump, which also features Newport clubmate Kellen Jones.

Daniel Cork and Robert Eales, both Newport, join two-time Paralympian and four-time IPC World Championship medallist Kyron Duke, from Cwmbran, in the shot put.

Former Newport Harriers ace and Winter Olympics bobsleigh hopeful Mica Moore will be expected to challenge for a medal in the 100m.

Moore ran in the relay at the last Commonwealth Games and is aiming to complete a notable double in 2018 by representing Wales in Australia and Great Britain at the Olympics in South Korea.

Nash and Juliet Sidney, another Newport Harrier, also go in the 100m, while Parry-Jones and Parc Bryn Bach Running Club’s Lauren Cooper are entered in the 1500m.

In the women’s field events, Cwmbran star Macey Jones gives herself two chances of medalling as she goes in the long jump and triple jump.

The Welsh Championships start at 7pm this evening and 11am tomorrow morning.
