GWENT duo Caitlyn Mapps and Remi Adebiyi continued their excellent seasons as they both struck gold at the England Athletics U15/U17 and Age Group Disability Athletics Championships.

Islwyn High School’s Mapps had already finished sixth in the under-15 girls’ 200m final when she leapt out to 5.45m to win the long jump.

The youngster, competing against 14 others, had taken the lead in round one with a jump of 5.32m, before consolidating her position by going 13cms further with her next effort.

Naturally delighted with the victory, the hard working Mapps paid tribute to Cardiff Archers AC coach Phil Warwicker, whose patience and advice has played a massive role in her success.

Mapps’ triumph followed gold medals at the Welsh Junior Championships and Welsh Schools Championships.

As for Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw and Newport Harriers ace Adebiyi, who won 1500m bronze at the SIAB Track & Field International in Ireland last month, he too made the top of the podium in Bedford.

Running in the under-17 men’s 1500m steeplechase, the teenager fought off Carmarthen Harriers’ Ben Thomas to cross the line first in a time of 4:21.23mins and win by more than a second.
