FORMER Monmouth School pupil Wayne Barnes will be in charge of Newport Gwent Dragons’ European Challenge Cup semi-final at Montpellier next Saturday.
The whistler from Bream in the Forest of Dean will take charge of the last four tie at the Altrad Stadium after the Dragons upset the odds at Gloucester last weekend.
Barnes, who took charge of the World Cup semi-final between Argentina and Australia, was in charge of the all-French Champions Cup quarter-final between Racing 92 and Toulon last Sunday.
The Englishman has established himself as the best referee in the Aviva Premiership and is liked by Top 14 sides as, unlike some of his colleagues, he makes attempts to speak to them in French.
Welsh official Nigel Owens has been given the Champions Cup semi-final between Racing and Leicester in Nottingham.
