BARGOED start life in the Principality Premiership when they host Neath this weekend while Bedwas will attempt to repeat a stunning home success against Pontypridd, writes Chris Kirwan.

It was something of an upset last season when Bargoed condemned Pontypool to life outside the top flight until at least 2020 thanks to an impressive run of form that claimed a top-four spot.

Steve Barber's side, Championship champions in 2015 only to be denied promotion because of a lack of the required criteria, made it to the big time thanks to a stunning streak of 11 victories and are sure to be a formidable side on their own turf.

Former Newport boss Sven Cronk adds some Premiership experience to the management team while they have secured the return of experienced prop Anthony Lott from Cross Keys and Wales 7s World Cup winner, and ex Newport captain, Lee Beach has arrived from Neath.

The Welsh All Blacks endured a torrid time last season, losing 20 of 22 league fixtures, and have been busy in the transfer market as they prepare to rebuild in the three seasons of ring-fenced rugby.

Bedwas caused a huge upset last season when they toppled then champions Pontypridd in awful conditions at Bridge Field, which won't quite be as heavy on opening weekend.

Steve Law has been typically busy with recruitment and Bedwas will hope to unearth a few gems that can help them secure a top-eight spot.

With tricky trips to Newport and Merthyr to come, another win against a Ponty side who earned a modicum of revenge with a Foster's Challenge Cup final victory would be a huge boost.

"We've had a good pre-season so are looking forward to the challenge," said fly-half Richard Powell, who has taken over as club captain from prop Dan Preece.

"Ponty will still be hurting a bit after losing to Ebbw Vale in the Premiership final last year but we can take confidence from last year when the boys dug in to win in terrible conditions.

"You've got to get stuck into a side as good as Ponty and work hard. Everyone has worked their socks off in pre-season and we are buzzing for the start of the season."
