RE THE letter from town councillor Mr A Child complaining that Blackwood Town Council will no longer have the money spent on Christmas lights (£800) reimbursed by the county borough council.
Taxpayers in Blackwood pay a precept of £140 a year to Blackwood Town Council, with the town council collecting a staggering £49,080 a year.
Unlike the county borough council, that provide many statutory responsibilities such as education and social services, the town council have none and are free to choose how to spend people’s taxes.
Caerphilly County Borough Council have seen their budget cut by a whopping £40 million with another£30 million to come, unlike the town council which have not seen a single penny cut form its core funding.
Having looked through town council accounts, I see that the town council has more than £16,000 left at the end of every financial year – so stop the moaning and be thankful that you have plenty of money to cover the loss of £800 a year.
This is unlike the county borough council, who are facing years of Tory austerity with shrinking budgets and more and more demand.
