THE UK government proposals to cut tax credits for working people showed clearly that their priorities are bad for families and workers in Newport East.
More than a quarter of families in Newport are in receipt of tax credits.
That’s 7,600 children in working families who receive tax credits in Newport East who could be affected.
Families affected would have lost an average of £1,300 and as much as £3,000 a year from next April – a cut of up to 10 per cent of monthly income for families working part time or on low pay, at a time when many households face rising costs of housing and bills.
The Labour Party called successfully on David Cameron to stop this tax credit cut.
We should not be looking to balance the books by hitting working people on low incomes, or by putting more children into poverty.
Jessica Morden MP and I asked residents to sign our petition opposing the tax credit cuts and to share their support for our campaign on social media.
